Years ago when Mrs. MAExile when working for a home health care agency, she accidently used the word "Colored" when talking to a client of the African American persuasion (Her mother and grandmother used in constantly and consistently). As far as the client was concerned she may just as well of said "N**#$".

To be fair, she said the client was very difficult to the point of requesting a black nurse because she didn't want a white one in her house. Of all the people to offend...

There was a funny comedy routine in the '60s of advisors trying to teach LBJ to say "Negro" instead of "nigra."

Very tricky. People of color is often OK, and sometimes not, but colored people is definitely not, except when used with the NAACP, when it is definitely OK.

In the 60’s they wanted to be called Negro, I remember by told by a Negro that black was an offensive term. Colored was OK at the time. Spade, nig and jig were not allowed.

I’ve just written a novel and a major character is a black man in a city and time when there are almost no blacks. The other characters react as they probably would given the circumstances. This is a major plot driver. My first reader was horrified as their reactions weren’t politically correct. I’m actually concerned now to see how the other reviewers react. It would be nearly impossible to rewrite either the reactions, which are critical to the plot, or to change the character to something more politically acceptable. (What would that be?)

Simply using a word , a word that has a specific meaning , in conversation shouldn’t be a reason to fire anyone... In 10 years we’ll have boatloads of people fired for using the word “black” when someone gets upset and the “offended” party retrieves their old internet posts just because black people will have a new word du jur that they like to call themselves.. and the old word is now offensive..

Years ago we adopted a grown black lab the name he came with was Spade. I was at a small convenience store and left the dog in the car with the windows rolled down. When I came out I saw the dog climbing out of the car window. I screamed SPADE! There were 2 black girls walking up to the store and when they heard me scream SPADE, they just about came unglued......... until they realized that I was yelling at a dog and not at them.
