Coyotes attack man near Niwot; wildlife officials kill two of three involved (CO)

LONGMONT -- Andrew Dickehage probably will think twice before deciding to walk to work again anytime soon.

Dickehage, 22, had been having car troubles, so at 5 a.m. Monday he was walking on North 73rd Street near Niwot Road on his way to work at CCI, on the IBM campus. That's when three coyotes attacked him.

Dickehage said he was walking along and heard a twig snap.

"I didn't think much of it," he said. "I thought it was probably a bunny."

Dickehage said he turned on his flashlight to see what made the noise when the largest of the three animals attacked.

The coyotes lunged at Dickehage, biting and scratching him has he continue along about a 70-yard stretch of road, Colorado Parks and Wildlife spokeswoman Jennifer Churchill said.

Dickehage said the larger coyote launched at him a second time after the initial attack. That's when he "crushed its head with my flashlight." The two smaller coyotes then started to attack.

"They were continuously jumping on me one after the other after the other," he said. "It was nonstop. It was so dark all I could see was the glimmer of their eyes."

Luckily it wasn't a small person or kid that was attacked.

Very unusual for coyotes to attack a grown adult. A sign of the times, perhaps.

Don’t they get the first bite free, like pit bulls?

Yes, and I believe it is a sign of the times.

Too many people want to learn to live with them and other predators, the animals get used to humans and lose their fear.

Seriously, the Indians had a saying to never trust a coyote.

However, while coyotes will sometimes group attack animals, especially dogs, they generally don’t dare to attack humans, so I suspect *something* is up. And the authorities better find out what it is in a hurry.

Coyotes do not fight other animals for dominance like dogs. They fight to kill.

It is unusual. This is first attack on a man I recall. I’ve camped plenty in coyote country and never been bothered by them.

“Luckily it wasn’t a small person or kid that was attacked. “

He works where I do. We saw him when he made it to work and someone was helping him sit down against the wall and my boss saw him walking to work and swerved to miss him. There are no lights on that road at all and it’s bordered by ranches and farms. It looked like someone had smacked the crap out of his face and that’s what we thought had happened. Poor guy, I’ve never heard of Coyotes acting like that.

I’ve seen them living in dens 25 feet behind a row of houses.

Big male came out and watched us working with heavy machinery.

I know a guy who shoots over 100 year here in the cornfields of IN.

We know also have cougars running around.

Rare attack, but not unprecedented.

Remember that adult female folk singer that was killed in Canada by coyotes a few years ago? Sad story. She probably had no idea that coyotes can -- and will -- attack.

I live pretty close to the center of Houston and we have coyotes here that travel up and down Buffalo Bayou. They leave the bayou and go into the surrounding neighborhoods. Normally they are very nocturnal but occasionally you see one in the day time. If they are living here in the center of Houston, they are living just about everywhere.

Colorado. I saw the local news item this week. What was funny was that they put up a picture of coyotes while they were talking on about the attack but added a disclaimer that the coyotes in the picture were NOT the ones who had attacked.

We wouldn’t want the wrong coyote unjustly accused!
