Last week I was at my hair salon, and as I was settling into the chair, Misty, my longtime hairstylist, was shaking her head as she finished sending a text. "I have a client coming in after you, and that was his wife telling me what to do to his hair," she told me. "It really puts me in an awkward position."
Wait, women do this? According to Misty, yes. "The worst is when they come in and hover and give me direction," she said.
Excuse me, what? I'm assuming if you're old enough to have a wife, you're a grown-up man. Although maybe this is a normal thing. After all, a few years ago Tom Brady hinted that the reason he kept his hair long was because his wife, Gisele, made him do it. (I give that couple a pass just on general principle. Plus, she played it down later.)
While the whole concept of art directing my guy's haircut seemed a little over-the-top to me at first (and not only because—full disclosure—my hub shaves his head in the tub every other week because there's not much left at this point), I softened my stance a bit after I thought about it.
A lot of guys just can't be bothered about things like hairstyles or clean clothes (amirite?), and they definitely appreciate a woman's feedback. I mean, you want your man to like your hair too, right? I think what I have the problem with is this concept of women acting like pageant moms, and the guys going along with it.
I will, however, offer a concession. If your guy ever takes it into his own hands to do this, a la Jake Gyllenhaal a few days ago, you march his butt right down to the salon.

Not all women spend a lot of time worrying about Hubs’ hair. For years DH went to the local barber, who offered two styles and a lot of local news.
All I cared was that DH would get it cut at regular intervals before someone mistook him for Chewbacca out of the Star Wars movies.

That is not her objection. She just doesn’t like the way I look with a beard just like I don’t like the way she looks with short hair.

My wife is the one who has to look at my hair the most, and whose opinion I care about most, so she has final say on my hair. I only see it a few seconds a day. I have no problem with her consulting with my haircutter, though I’d not like her bossing around.
A few years ago I returned to the town I grew up. The old-school barbershop is still there, but the old time barber passed away. Now I get my hair cut by a middle-aged lady from Macedonia.
She cuts it just like the old barber did.
I’m with you. I don’t accompany my husband when he gets his hair cut and hover over the proceedings.
Probably also takes him for regular transfusions of space alien blood so Earth's atmosphere doesn't kill him.

The trade off is, I GET TO DRESS YOU FOR WALKS IN PUBLIC for the next month my hair is growing back.
