Gotta put my vote in for the Canadian Bacon Cosmo at Joey’s in Williamsport, PA. I have dreams about it.
There was an interesting (and extensive) cheesesteak survey done in the Philly area a few months ago - can’t find the .pdf - but all the name joints (Jim’s, Geno’s, Pats, etc.) didn’t fare too well.
Where do you get one in So. Cal?
I would call to see if they're still in business before making the drive.
Nope, I remember it to be raspberry! I went there often just for them!
For culinary amazement...yes, it has to be the Monte Cristo.
I make a Reuben to die for. I also put baked chicken on it! My po-boy ain’t bad either!
Please tell me that those fries weren’t put out on newspaper to drain! :(
Nope. Gave up after #9
Yes, I miss Rose’s. I used to live a few blocks away, but couldn’t afford to go there very much. Did you ever try a Florentiner from Rose’s Bakery, down by the Stadium Fred’s? 30 years later, I still think of those from time to time.
OMG!! I love Florentines, and used to stop by Rose’s bakery across from the Stadium Fred Meyers all the time. After Rose’s disappeared I turned to Elephants Delicatessan. Their artisan whole wheat with walnuts bread was to die for.
Sometimes I crave pork smoked sausages called blotwurst, slowly cooked in the oven while snuggled with homemade sauerkraut in white wine, and accompanied by little white potatoes. Sounds German, right? It’s Choucroute Garnie, from the province of Alsace. Goes good with beer so I hear, but I drink white Zinfidel wine with it.
Two of my sisters lived in that brick apartment building next door to the bakery for a while, and I lived in various rathole places all over Northwest. I miss Portland, at least the Portland of 30-40 years ago. Haven’t been there for years, since my last relative moved away.
I attended PSU and lived on campus - SW 10th & Montgomery. Moved out of downtown Portland in 1976. Joined the Navy and lived all over the world but came back to the NW in 1986 to work at the Trojan Nuclear Plant. After the shutdown moved to Longview, WA. Still live there.
The Pride of Pittsburgh, PA
I grew up not far from Hillsdale (Wilson 1972) and worked for the Forest Service in different places in Oregon. Portland was a pretty good place to spend the winter, until fire season rolled around again. Put in a lot of time at the main library on 10th, and Powell’s too.
I’ve been in Arizona and New Mexico since 1985, mostly working in copper mining.
Still... one of the best sandwiches I have ever eaten at a restaurant.
Slap it all together and eat it.
