Already have and he doesn’t. A default means interest rates will skyrocket. That makes borrowing very difficult as well as selling T-bills due to the hit on credit worthiness.
Ask yourself this: which party’s constituents are most dependent upon government borrowing and spending?

I think the furor is largely the result of the government already overdrawing the debt limit. They have already borrowed too much.
