Got an Engine - What do I do with it?

The body of my lawn mower broke. Totaled. I purchased a new lawn mower. But I now have a 6.25 HP Briggs & Stratton engine that runs as good as the day it was bought. So what do I do with the engine? (It seems such a waste to get rid of it)

A few extra parts available online and an old engine can be used to build the Interdementional Hyper Time Travel Vehicle. Complete plans are available for the undermedicated.

I haven’t quite figured out the value of a Pitching machine except perhaps a crowd control unit.

You could probably get it to run OK if you used a heavy cast iron pulley on it. The vertical makes it a little hard to use though. You can’t run them on there side... the oil distribution won’t work, they don’t have an oil pump.

If you were able to get it to run smoothly and connected a car alternator with the diodes removed, you’d have a 3 phase generator (put 12v on the rotor and you can get 5 or 6 KW at 100v pretty easily.

This 3 phase alternator will run another car alternator (also with the diodes taken out) as a brush-less motor. You could run anything with that motor.

Or, you could just use an unmodified car alternator, put it on a small cart and pull it behind you E-Bike. (you’d have to adjust the rotor winding voltage to get the desired DC voltage for your E-Bike.)

Bolt on a 24" cross-rip blade to the axle, hang it from a pendant on your HUS, and trim your trees with it.

I put one together a while back with a 3.5 HP horizontal shaft engine with a coupling to the alternator. The coupling parts were from the same company. Makes a really nice set up. A friend has a horiz rig made on an old power washer base.

Far better than trying to charge batteries with a regular battery charger.

Trade the engine to a lawnmower repair shop in exchange for repair/maintenance work.

Remember this is probably a splash lube, not pressure lube.
So that doesn’t always work out.

Great link. Now, how to replace the 3-5 hp gas motor with a small wood fired steam engine?

With a 6 HP motor you should be able to get a riding mower airborne!

Fun. And that one could be useful for demolition, it can put holes in walls. But really in the end it’s the pure joy of launching 2x4s at dangerous speeds.
