Want to show your cat affection? Think twice before stroking it [truncated]
Daily Mail [UK] ^ | 7 October 2013 | Victoria Woollaston

If you really love your cat, don’t stroke it.

Researchers say that the pets become stressed if they’re constantly petted.

Animal behaviour experts discovered that cats released hormones linked to anxiety when they were handled by humans.

In fact, the tests appeared to show that no cats enjoyed being stroked.

Some were prepared to tolerate it – but they were the individuals that showed the highest levels of distress.

The researchers concluded that genuine cat lovers should avoid constantly petting their feline friends to spare their feelings.

The research also dispelled the popular belief that cats are solitary creatures who struggle to live happily together in groups.

Thank you everybody. Right now I just can’t afford to spend extra money on a cat enclosure (I’ve had some medical issues $$$ ).

I bought a neon harness that is designed for a very small dog. I will try to bring him into the garage at night. The thought of giving him away makes me want to cry, but I can’t be selfish, I have to think of him.

He is beautiful tabby, about one year old. One of the friendliest cats I’ve ever come across!

I have been warned by more than one person to be careful when “giving a cat/kittens away for free”. Apparently some very despicable people out there will take advantage and use the cats/kittens as live bait for pit bull fights or snake food.

not trying to start trouble, but you seriously have to ask what to do after you freaked thinking it was your cat in the road?

Build the cat a pen with a house, and enough room for some sand for a litter box.

That way you’re not stressed our and the cat is safe.

Reminds them of being groomed by their mother.

I think this means the cats didn’t like the poindexters doing research on them.

Are you sure you are allergic to ‘this’ cat? Some cats just don’t trigger the allergies....or....take a zyrtec every day (I do—but not becuz of aniamls)....

Yup. Chills ‘em right out. Though I can remember momma kitty giving a kitten an epic, against-the-grain spit bath.

She’s a retard. My cat jumps up on my lap and shoves her nose under my hand demanding pets, and when I stop she just sorta wraps her paws around my hand and bites/licks it a little until I resume petting her so she can resume purring.

There are many complications about letting this cat indoors. He got fixed yesterday and slept in the garage. My garage now smells just terrible, my husband who has an ultra sensitive nose, is going to hit the ceiling, even I am bothered by it.

My backyard is really too small for a cat house and I think he would probably start crying and disturb the neighbors. I did however find some flashing LED pet collars on Amazon.com that I went to try.

Pita, the cat that got hit is still alive. They will keep him one more day and if no one adopts him he will be euthanized tomorrow. I don’t own Pita. To save him I would have to pay 60.00 for adoption and all the vet/hospital fees. I just can’t do it. I’ve already paid a ton of money to help the stray kittens that I took, plus all the doctors bills for whisker (neutering, shots, etc). I’m so sad.

Very sad situation. I am out of suggestions except to just let him go and try to stay safe. If you put him in your backyard with food/water, he will remember and at least stay close to that area. Also, please do NOT put a collar on an outside kitty....they get stuck on things. Unless it’s a breakaway. Even an elastic one causes problems. A feral i was feeding actually put her front leg through the collar and her leg was stuck for days...she walked on 3 legs. I was finally able to trap her and cut it loose....rubbed her leg raw. It was elastic.

Success! Whiskers spent two nights in my garage. Now he wants to come into the house..... real bad.

I need to find some Solar Powered LED Flashing Cat Collar.

I need to find something to entice him at night, something that he will find irresistible. Is there anything out there that cats just adore? Whiskers is real finicky about what he eats! Oy Vey!

Got my cat neutered so hopefully he will stay close to home. Also purchased a neon colored sign that stands on the side of the street stating that children are present and playing. I figured this would slow cars down for my cat as well.

Any tips for keeping him on my property? I wish I could afford a catio!

Neutered is good. As for keeping him on your property, .best way is still to bring him inside. Beyond that...some sort of bed/shelter that he knows is his, maybe. Fellow I knew used a soft, insulated tooolbag.

I thought cats purred meaning being very happy when petted. =^..^=

this study has classical signs of god-awful research. Not only does it fly in the face of centuries of human experience with cats (I mean really, the cat petting itself on the sleeping guy’s hand is pretty tell-tale), but I’ll bet the testing conditions blew. If they took the cat out of it’s home, to a strange place, to be touched in a strange way by strangers while hooked up to or near a strange machine - what the hell did ya think would happen?????? All you have proven is house cats are miserable outside their domain.

Pretty much. What this proves more than anything else is that cats do NOT like having their routines disrupted.

Once I learned that cats live longer and stay healthier than outdoor cats. Plus with cats nearby I get to laugh more than if they were out.

And mine begs for hugs and petting. That article is bunk.
