Where's Craig Kimbrel? Not in the game (Oct. Baseball Live Thread)
ESPN ^ | October 8, 2013 | David Schoenfield

Posted on 10/08/2013 10:04:36 AM PDT by campaignPete R-CT

Craig Kimbrel is supposedly the heir to Mariano Rivera. In his postseason career as closer, Rivera recorded 27 appearances of 2+ innings.

Uribe bunted two balls foul, ... and then tomahawked a high fastball from David Carpenter into left-field stands for a shocking two-run homer ....

Note that I wrote "David Carpenter" and not "Craig Kimbrel."

The Braves had to win this game. Lose, and they go home. Somehow they lost -- in the late innings, no less -- without using the most dominant relief pitcher in the game.

The sad thing is, Gonzalez apparently didn't even think of using Kimbrel for two innings. "I think six outs isn't something we were even talking about in the dugout," he said after the game.

But what’s the difference between four outs and six outs? Six pitches? Ten pitches? And that doesn’t even factor in that the Dodgers had the 5-6-7 hitters due up in the eighth and the 8-9-1 hitters up in the ninth.

So instead you lost a game with a guy who had a 6.07 ERA last year for the Houston Astros.

... ".. I want the ball." We'll see if Kimbrel confirms that, but even if he didn't say that, his look of disgust, standing there with his hands on his hips, will haunt Braves fans all winter.

This should be covered in Managing 101. ... Who cares if it's the seventh inning or the eighth inning or the ninth. I'd rather lose with Carpenter in the ninth inning or the 10th inning or whenever ...

Look, managing your bullpen in a structured manner in the regular season is one thing.

October is not the regular season.

Fredi Gonzalez didn't think the best reliever in the game can get six outs.

He ended up getting none.

I wish the lead was 15-1 and BOS started playing bean ball with the TAMPA FAGGOT TRASH.

I’m glad to see Tampa go down too. ;-)

Red Sox are in good position to take their 3rd World Series Championship this century. Duh Yankees are so last century.

Honestly, if BOS loses in the ALCS, whatever, as long as the TAMPA GAYS and their smug dick “genius” of a manager lost, I’M THRILLED!!!

p.s. I don’t hate the NYY.

You, clearly do not like the Rays. ;p

Controversy in D-town.

Why the hell is that SOB Kieth Olbermann all over TBS? I saw he has a show on ESPN too. Go back to MSNBC, dickwad.

Some sad news in Chi, the second to last living Cub to play in the ‘45 WS, outfielder Andy Pafko, died. 96 year old Lennie Merullo, a “light-hitting infielder”, is that last man standing. I guess he wins the “Hellfish Bonanza” (old Simpson’s reference).

In the improbable scenario that the members of the 1945 Cubs entered into a tontine, I would think that the investment that provided them with an annuity, and whose principal eventually went to the last survivor, would be not a painting, but an old billygoat.

Pafko was a star OF (and later, briefly, 3B) for the Cubs, and was still pretty good in his years with the Dodgers and Braves. Merullo was not so great, but, hey, someone had to play SS during the War years. Good to hear that he’s still going strong at age 96.

According to wikipedia, Merullo still worked in scouting until he retired only 10 years ago.

i jus wanna know if y’all were chucklin’ abit in the 9th when Maddon brought in starter Archer for 1 batter (Pedroia) and then immediately go to Wright for Ortiz (his “last” pitcher) ... I assumed he would let Archer pitch the extra innings ... but it was Price warming in the bullpen for the extra innings ... on 3 days extra short rest.

Game 5 woulda been another bullpen game, if the scenario played out. Maybe some other managers who never watched Torre-Stottlemeyer do it right, they might have watch Maddon last nite and learn something ... like Mattingly. I would like to see Maddon in the NL where he can really manage.

I know GOPSTER think all things Maddon are really really cool.

“I know GOPSTER think all things Maddon are really really cool.”

Joe “Watch Me” Maddon. I’m sickened from his schtick; you might think he invented the game of baseball. He didn’t. And he’s won ZERO World Series, despite being such an “innovator”.

Oh, and you manage a “small market” that’s YOUR choice. I’d love to see this “smartest guy in the room” go to a “large market” to manage and see if he finally wins a WS.

Until then, F*C* YOU, JOE!!! STFU!

No American league games today. I’ll be relieved to get the game over against the A’s win or lose. The A’s always give the Tigers fits and I’m actually more confidant in matching the Tigers against the Red Sox.

Gotta agree. Oakland always gives me the shakes.

after game 4, I gotta think we have a swinging chance...we have owned Colon, and if the real verlander shows up, we can send these pesky A’s packing....again....

Go Tigers...(cheering wildly in IA these days... :) )

DET, OAK, whatever. I’d like to see BOS win, but if they dont , they don’t.

As long as TAMPA GAY and their “Einstein” of baseball managing aren’t playing anymore, its gravy for me.

Verlander pitched a stellar game in Oakland but the bats just weren’t there to back him up. Hopefully yesterday was a sign that they’ve awoken.

In the end I’ll be rooting for the AL.

Fortunately Jim Leyland has already gotten us (AL fans) the home field advantage for the big show.

lets hope so, indeed.

I did make a pilgrimage back to comerica this year..in august during that five game set against the royals. saw sat and sunday games....cabrera walk-off on sat night, and a home run on sunday, on the first pitch he saw..homers on consecutive pitches....was very cool. sunday game was max’s 18 win, too.

squatting here in the middle of cards, royals and twins country.

“Fredi Gonzalez has continued the Bobby Cox idea that you can manage in the post season the same way you manage in the regular season and the results speak for themselves.”

That is exactly true. The post season is the prize. You go to the post season to see which team has the best three pitchers and timely hitting.

I love the braves but this lineup just cannot hit.

Among other things, I'll be glad to see Dan Uggla retire or go somewhere else.

I think over half of the Braves starters hit under .200 in the series with the Dodgers. You definitely need you BEST pitching to carry that mess.

Girardi agrees to a new 4 year contract with the NYY. $4 million+ per.

“You, clearly do not like the Rays. ;p”

Actually, I didn’t mind them until a couple years ago. They were a complete joke for years and years and it was good that they improved; I get sick of BOS or NYY every year too.

I’m just beyond sick of hearing about “The Genius” Maddon. Really? Why?

If you want to talk modern day MLB genius managers, Tony La Russa and Jim Leyland - SURE!!! They’re WINNERS!!! Joe “Shoney’s” Maddon? Not so much.

Olbermann: Stick him and Maddon in a room. Then time how long it takes for al of the oxygen to get sucked out. I switch or mute him and wait to hear Pedro.

RIP Andy Pafko. Godspeed, Lennie Merullo.
