Craig Kimbrel is supposedly the heir to Mariano Rivera. In his postseason career as closer, Rivera recorded 27 appearances of 2+ innings.
Uribe bunted two balls foul, ... and then tomahawked a high fastball from David Carpenter into left-field stands for a shocking two-run homer ....
Note that I wrote "David Carpenter" and not "Craig Kimbrel."
The Braves had to win this game. Lose, and they go home. Somehow they lost -- in the late innings, no less -- without using the most dominant relief pitcher in the game.
The sad thing is, Gonzalez apparently didn't even think of using Kimbrel for two innings. "I think six outs isn't something we were even talking about in the dugout," he said after the game.
But whats the difference between four outs and six outs? Six pitches? Ten pitches? And that doesnt even factor in that the Dodgers had the 5-6-7 hitters due up in the eighth and the 8-9-1 hitters up in the ninth.
So instead you lost a game with a guy who had a 6.07 ERA last year for the Houston Astros.
... ".. I want the ball." We'll see if Kimbrel confirms that, but even if he didn't say that, his look of disgust, standing there with his hands on his hips, will haunt Braves fans all winter.
This should be covered in Managing 101. ... Who cares if it's the seventh inning or the eighth inning or the ninth. I'd rather lose with Carpenter in the ninth inning or the 10th inning or whenever ...
Look, managing your bullpen in a structured manner in the regular season is one thing.
October is not the regular season.
Fredi Gonzalez didn't think the best reliever in the game can get six outs.
He ended up getting none.

Three in nine. Red Sox...champions again!!
Congratulations Sox!!!!!!!
Uehara was amazing.
Hey, big'ol_freeper... good to see you again! I had hoped to see you on this thread during the post-season.
How 'bout our Sox, huh? I knew they'd be good this year, but I never predicted they'd be this good! :o)
I was checking the thread in the morning when I got to work. I liked the team right from spring training and felt they would challenge for the East. But yeah, far exceeded expectations.
I’d still take McCarver over the STL fanboy...not that that says much...
Cherrington, Farrell, LA Dodgers, FA signings, Cabrera injured, staying healthy, Uehara’s brilliance, weak NL opponent, etc., etc., etc... EVERY star lined up for BOS to win this year. Enjoy it worst-to-first Red Sox fans, ‘cause it’s not likely to happen again next year. In fact, I was listen to 98.5 Sports Hub today and this scenario came up: If the entire team was kept together would they win next year? The answer was “no” and I agree. It’s been AWESOME to watch; this season was a most improbable gift.
“I’m actually glad it’s over.” I agree; the stress (even though the WS wasn’t close) was enough. It’s a main reason (along with Dumb and Dumber) that I didn’t watch
the last three games (save for the 9th inning last night).
Erin Andrews: She serves as eye candy and nothing more.
This is cool, too: https://twitter.com/ShaneVictorino/status/396023944010268672/photo/1
We’ll do it again at some point!
Cheers!
Big Daddy’s boys showed up for work at nearby job site at 6 AM and there were still people in Fenway Park, lights on, crowds on the sidewalks!!
Go figure!
Big Mommy was in a coma!
LOL
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I forgot to congratulate ex-Cub Dempster. 3IP 1R in this postseason
Congrats, you ginger g***!
Dear Lord...
I wish he would have gotten that job instead of the one he did.
I don't know about Middlebrooks. He's had more than his share of chances, IMO. I don't remember when he ever hit consistently... someone here may have to refresh my memory. Personally, I think Middlebrooks belongs on a team like the Houston Astros. It won't bother me if he's let go in the off season.
Xander Bogaerts is here to stay! He's no Manny Machado, but I'm happy with him so far.
I think Ellsbury's gone...hope he stays but I wouldn't give him the BIG $$ and long term deal he wants. Seattle will throw $$ at him. He's been hurt a lot the last two years, and it's still hard to explain the huge drop off in his power numbers.
I agree about Ellsbury. I don't want to see him go, but it's crazy to pay huge amounts of $$ to keep him, and I agree with your statements above about his numerous injuries and that drop off in Jacoby's production.
I leave you for now with this one last very happy thought:
There are millions who are even more upset than the Cards and their fans...that's the Yankees...who look like the morning line fave to finish LAST in the AL East in 2014..
HA! As a Red Sox fan who lives on the Red Sox/Yankees Mason-Dixon line (in north-central Connecticut), that happy thought *really* warms my heart! :-)
Sure sounds like Dubya is qualified to replace Bud Selig. Lots of heads would explode for sure if GWB actually got the job...
So Dempster was "pitching" at Fenway at 3 AM, then signing autographs for fans outside the park?
Darn, I was up past 3 AM last night. Unfortunately 110 miles away from Fenway though... ;-)
Wow!
Who are "Big Daddy's boys"?
Yup... I agree. Injuries late in the season can really play havoc with any potential post-season wins.
Uehara IS brilliant... a joy to behold. He's 38 now... I wonder how long he can keep doing this?
Looking at NL for the next few years..the Cards, Dodgers, Braves, Pirates, Nats, Reds..I love Theo Epstein for what he did, putting together the two WS teams in 2004 and 2007, but man oh man..did he ever make a BAD career move taking the Cubs GM job..it could be another25 years before they can even contend for the division
S**T!!
