Where's Craig Kimbrel? Not in the game (Oct. Baseball Live Thread)
ESPN ^ | October 8, 2013 | David Schoenfield

Posted on 10/08/2013 10:04:36 AM PDT by campaignPete R-CT

Craig Kimbrel is supposedly the heir to Mariano Rivera. In his postseason career as closer, Rivera recorded 27 appearances of 2+ innings.

Uribe bunted two balls foul, ... and then tomahawked a high fastball from David Carpenter into left-field stands for a shocking two-run homer ....

Note that I wrote "David Carpenter" and not "Craig Kimbrel."

The Braves had to win this game. Lose, and they go home. Somehow they lost -- in the late innings, no less -- without using the most dominant relief pitcher in the game.

The sad thing is, Gonzalez apparently didn't even think of using Kimbrel for two innings. "I think six outs isn't something we were even talking about in the dugout," he said after the game.

But what’s the difference between four outs and six outs? Six pitches? Ten pitches? And that doesn’t even factor in that the Dodgers had the 5-6-7 hitters due up in the eighth and the 8-9-1 hitters up in the ninth.

So instead you lost a game with a guy who had a 6.07 ERA last year for the Houston Astros.

... ".. I want the ball." We'll see if Kimbrel confirms that, but even if he didn't say that, his look of disgust, standing there with his hands on his hips, will haunt Braves fans all winter.

This should be covered in Managing 101. ... Who cares if it's the seventh inning or the eighth inning or the ninth. I'd rather lose with Carpenter in the ninth inning or the 10th inning or whenever ...

Look, managing your bullpen in a structured manner in the regular season is one thing.

October is not the regular season.

Fredi Gonzalez didn't think the best reliever in the game can get six outs.

He ended up getting none.

Once again, Beltran is left standing at the plate with the bat on his shoulder..

A beautiful sight... ;-)

Hope we see it again during Game 6 at Fenway.

I’ve never seen the CC League play but I have a son-in-law and grandson who are big fans.

The odds of making it to MLB are so tough and they all work so hard——nice to see.

Yes. Watching some of these players progress from the MLB minor leagues (or from independent leagues like the Cape Cod League) up to the majors is pretty amazing.

They also should have had him catch a few games during the later part of the season

Napoli can no longer catch... he's had some serious hip injuries. I don't know the details of his injuries, but he can no longer do the catcher's squat for any length of time.

Lester should have attacked the ball. Get his cuts ...you never know.

I'm really surprised the Sox overall haven't done more bunting in key situations during these post-season games. I seem to remember earlier in the regular season, they were bunting quite a bit to move runners along.

I don't get why most MLB players don't have the art of the bunt down cold.

Kozma lays down the bunt that move Freese to 2nd. Cards are trying to manufacture a run.

Glad it didn't work for the Cards, but I like that kind of baseball. I'd really like to see more of that from the Red Sox. In Game 6 of the WS, and in 2014...

Wainwright and the Cards manager are morons.

They continue to put the ball over the plate to Ortiz, and therefore will lose the series.

The analysts on the MLB Network's post-game show said the same, in a "kinder, gentler" way, lol. They didn't make any World Series predictions though. They said the Cards still have a lot of chances to win behind Michael Wacha.

“Grady Little comparisons all over again. “

I remember that like it was yesterday. I was screaming at the TV and figured maybe it was just me-—but I checked my FR thread.

It wasn’t just me.:_)

This series deserves to go to a game 7. I think the Cards will win tonite....Wacha has been awesome..he might well throw a 1 or 2 hitter....and I think Lackey, who's been great, is about due to implode.

Sawx win in 7...and Yawkey Way is gonna be one big incredible party.

"...So, Napoli finds himself in a nice position. He also hasn’t sworn off catching again. Napoli has said he has never experienced any symptoms of the avascular necrosis in his hips, but talk of that could still be problematic in free agency."

“If Farrell puts Salty in, we could be making those John Farrell/Grady Little comparisons all over again.”

Exactly!

Yawkey Way is gonna be something to see after we win. Wonder how the BPD will make their presence known in the wake of the Marathon terrorist attack. That whole area is a big target..hope all stay safe..

Have had to move four times in the last two years which has not been a lot of fun. Busy trying to make sales and get content uploaded to a few web sites I work with.

Just pretty busy and more than a little tired on a regular basis.

And, no - I did not think the Red Sox would go this far !
The guys look good for the next two games but I’m serious - no way do I want to see a game seven. The stress alone and I’ll be climbing the Zakim bridge looking for a good spot to jump from.

I think I will go into town tomorrow night just for the fun of it. 2007 in town was great, 2004 was just amazing but to be in Boston if they win would be a great deal of fun. I used to live right in the city across from the Prudential Center in the Back Bay. Being on the front lines of New England sports celebrations was the best. I sure miss it.

How are things with you overall - everything ok? Sure hope so.

A prison guard that I know told me on Saturday that he was notified that some of them could be called up for security details in Boston.

I never heard of prison guards being used for details, so it looks like Boston will be heavily guarded.

I still won’t go to any public celebration. Not happening.

Hubby and I were lucky to be at the ALCS game where the Red Sox defeated the Tigers (Victorino's grand slam sealed the deal). We "partied" at Fenway until 1:15 AM ET, when Fenway Security started kicking everybody out.

When we got out onto Yawkey Way, then Landsdowne Street, we were stunned to see the numerous bars in the area all closed down early (this was on a Saturday night). The Boston Police had mandated that the bars all close sometime right after the game ended (I don't know specifically what time). The usual club-hopper types were wandering around, wondering why all the bars were closed. It was strange. But that's one example of how the Boston PD will try to control the area immediately around Fenway.

On the NESN post-game show last night, there was a crawl going across the screen suggesting that Game 6 attendees "leave their cars at home" and take the T into Boston. On-street parking will be unavailable except for Fenway-area residents with residential permit stickers on their cars.

There ARE several parking lots and garages in the Fenway area, so I don't think it will be impossible to drive at least within a few blocks of Fenway Park.
