I have used a beer can to patch a hole in my exhaust myself.

Ha! My dad did that when they traded in our 1957 Ford station wagon, except he used a coffee can, I think. Anyway, when the salesman fired up and raced the engine, he was keeping his fingers crossed that it held (it did) and we ended up with a new station wagon. :-)
