When Ronald Reagan was president, the leader of the opposition was Speaker of the House Tip ONeill, a liberal Boston Democrat. The two Irish-American glad-handers had both been FDR-loving New Dealers, born less than two years apart. They dined together, partied together and swapped Irish jokes.
But they didnt like each other. Once Reagan was asked if he had heard about Pac-Man. He said, Someone told me it was a round thing that gobbles up money. I thought it was Tip ONeill.

I got more laughs out of Reagan than most of the comics of his day.
In the 80’s those of us that read Playboy for the articles :-), stumbled upon a gem about Tip O’Neal entitled the “Colossus of Waste” with a caricature of Tip that was even more rotund and bloated than real life. But it was a head turner of his pork, schemes and do I dare say kick backs that would make you scream. This was from a time even publications like that would gore everyone’s sacred cow.
Like Mathews knows anything about Reagan. Tip hated Reagan and vice versa.
Tip O’Neill was VILE....Reagan was GENTLEMAN....no contest.
Reagan got some votes from Democrats whose counties he carried.
Matthews was Tip’s chief of staff at the time, wasn’t he?
Here's the passage at issue:In the 1980s, the war caucus in Congress armed bin Laden and the mujaheddin in their fight with the Soviet Union. In fact, it was the official position of the State Department to support radical jihad against the Soviets. We all know how well that worked out.Let's leave aside for now the insulting, utterly asinine, sickening, inexcusable use of the phrase "war caucus" to describe those (including Reagan!) who supported the mujaheddin against the Soviets. That word choice alone is almost entirely disqualifying for its purveyor to ever be president.
Instead, let's just look at a little history here -- because the ignorance evident in this paragraph is truly astonishing. One would be hard pressed to find even a single historian, whether right, left, or center, who would argue anything other than that the Soviet failure in Afghanistan was not just a huge factor, but probably an essential one, in the Soviets' ultimate loss of the Cold War. Once Reagan was asked if he had heard about Pac-Man. He said, "Someone told me it was a round thing that gobbles up money. I thought it was Tip ONeill."
For those of you wondering, this appeared in today’s USA Weekend section in the Sunday paper.
Well, I remember one time when Tip and Reagan attended the same party and cheerfully toasted each other. Maybe that’s where Prissy Chrissy got the idea that they got along.
