MLB playoffs 2013 (Baseball Live Thread)
Sporting News ^ | September 23, 2013

For the first time since 1992, the Pittsburgh Pirates are in MLB's postseason. The Bucs clinched at least a spot in the wild-card game after a 2-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs that ended with a bizarre play at the plate, and a 4-3 loss by the Washington Nationals to the St. Louis Cardinals. The loss eliminated the Nats from contention.

The Cincinnati Reds are playoff-bound as well, after beating the New York Mets, 3-2 in 10 innings. The focus over the regular season's final six days now shifts to the NL Central race, which the Cards still lead by two games over the Pirates and Reds.

Lost in the NL happenings Monday: The Detroit Tigers were unable to clinch a playoff berth in the American League. They lost, 4-3 in 11 innings, to the Twins in Minnesota.

Indians win was 14th straight over the Pale Hose, I’m told that’s the longest losing streak against any opponent in franchise history. Royals eliminated, sadly for them they have a potential 4 game winning steak coming up that would mean nothing.

Rivera’s final home game is at hand, I think he’ll pitch the 9th regardless of the score.

Flubs victory in final home game hurts Pirates division hopes.

Someone tell Jim Leyland THERE IS NO CRYING IN BASEBALL. It’s unseemly enough when kids do it at the Little League World Series.

Even on the financial front they didn't do themselves any favors. At one time Monday Night Football was a huge windfall for the NFL. They scheduled one game each week for a national TV audience, matching up two of the top teams in the league. There were some legendary games that attracted huge TV audiences over the years.

That doesn't really work in the era of the salary cap and free agency. The problem was that the NFL scheduled these games in advance based on how the teams finished in the prior season's standings. They had to change that whole system because nowadays there's no continuity from one season to the next. I think back to the Monday Night Football game on the opening weekend of the 1987, which matched up the previous two Super Bowl champions (the Giants and the Bears). If you scheduled that game this year, you'd have the Giants and Ravens on the field in a game that wouldn't be much of a game at all.

My prediction:

The Oakland A’s win the whole enchilada.
World Series Champions will be the Athletics.

AMERICAN LEAGUE
BOS magic number is 2 for HFA. Plus the AL has HFA for the WS.

Big series coming up in BAL. Showalter is a crusty galoot, so I expect BAL to play balls to the wall.

RINO-Lexington-’n=Concord,
u posted trivia for FRI ... slow down!

glad the ChiSox and ‘Stros are no longer involved wid dis pennant race. Phillies were the embarrassment of the day ... and Texas makes 4 errors in first 3 innings ... Cleveland RADIO 1100 loud & clear on the east coast ... Yankees mixing their minor leaguers in vs TB is ruining the playoff atmosphere at the cathedral.

Mariano Rivera relieved D. Betances

Not quite sure what “RINO-Lexington-’n=Concord” means, but I don’t like it.

And this is a beisbol thread ... Eastern TN goes for the Braves ... Central goes for the Reds ... and Western TN goes for the Cardinals.

O...K... Well, after you come down from your mescaline high, you check back in with me.

For the record, I don’t know squat about nor care about baseball (or football, or basketball, or sports).

Very cool what how Jeter and Petitte went out to “relieve” Mariano. I even admit my screen got a bit blurry.

It’s a rare thing in this day and age to see players who spend their entire career with one team like that.

LOL, I think we’ve established that HFA means home field advantage. You’re kinda defeating the purpose of using an acronym.

That was a cheap emotional ploy by Girardi. I bet if they left him out there to get the last out the team would have rallied with 5 in the bottom of the 9th to make a winner of out him, now we’ll never know!

I hope the poor guy gets 1 more save chance. I heard he wants to spend an inning in center field too.

in the important games, today we have:

T. Wood vs STL
R.A. Dickey vs TB
C.J. Wilson vs TEX
P. Hernandez (3-2, 6.05) vs. CLE

Twins pitchng rotation is a joke.

And, for the meaningless meaningful games:

Cliff Lee vs Atlanta
Felix Hernandez vs Oakland
Scott Feldman vs Boston
T. Koehler (4-10, 4.45) vs Detroit
C. McHugh (0-3, 8.59) vs Dodgers

PITT vs CIN: winner of series gets homefield in alleged TUES wildcard.

(as y’all can see, some potential for pitching performances tonite.)
