Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) broke with Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) on Monday, revealing that he won't filibuster legislation to fund the government in service of conservative goals to defund Obamacare.
The Republican leader's decision is a major blow to the push by Cruz and powerful conservative activist groups, who wanted Republicans to unite and filibuster a continuing resolution until Democrats caved agreed to gut funding for the Affordable Care Act.
"Senator McConnell supports the House Republicans' bill and will not vote to block it, since it defunds Obamacare and funds the government without increasing spending by a penny," McConnell spokesman Don Stewart told TPM in an email Monday. "He will also vote against any amendment that attempts to add Obamacare funding back into the House Republicans' bill." The decision clears a path for Democrats to pass a continuing resolution that funds Obamacare. Procedurally, Democrats need 60 votes (they have 54 members) to advance the House-passed continuing resolution. But Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) can strike the language defunding Obamacare with 51 votes, which frees up McConnell and every other Republican to vote against such an amendment. This way he never has to actually vote to fund Obamacare but doesn't force a shutdown over an unachievable goal.

Midge (spelling intentional!) McConnell better stop running those campaign commercials denouncing his opponent for being PRO-Obamacare! Although, I have a feeling ol’ Midge won’t be the GOP candidate come next year. D@mn RINO!
We need to vote these scumbags out of office. Decent people have been assaulted by these self-appointed emperors.
I totally agree.
> We truly need a new term to replace RINO. These people are truly Republicans in the modern sense and being called a RINO is a badge of honor to them. They may be conservatives in name only, but they are modern Republicans through and through.
Traitors(R)?
Voting ain’t going to fix what is broke in this country.....
Too late for playing nicey nicey
The enemy is inside the walls
Do y’all suppose that the Republicans are concerned that, if they vote to defund ObamaCare, their stocks will decline.
McConnell has officially joined the other side. Damn them and damn him.
Perfect!

This says exactly opposite of the title. WTF?
Should be indicted for treason. Pure and simple. End of story.
Stay Republican long enough to primary him off the Nov 2014 ballot.
Midge’s corporate sponsors? Wonder if Tokyo Rove’s disgusting PAC is one of his biggest donors.
McCain benefits from democrat crossovers in the primary. AZ has an open primary and McCain gets the vote out for him, from democrats.
He truly is a RINO in every sense of the expression.
Defund Mitch.
EX-Senator McConnell has a NICE ring to it.
Midge Beasley McConnell
That finally explains how Juan McShame keeps getting re-elected.
And you think that lying weasel Romney would have repealed it?
You’re delusional.
At least we have a party we can save. But had Romney got in, it would have been an impenetrable fortress of establishment republicrats.
So the upside to Obama getting elected is we have a party to save and have as our own.
