APPLE CRUSHES EXPECTATIONS, SELLS 9 MILLION IPHONES OVER THE OPENING WEEKEND
Business Insider ^ | 09/23/2013 | Jay Yarow

Posted on 09/23/2013 8:03:28 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

Apple announced that it sold over 9 million iPhones during the opening weekend of sales. This is much better than analysts expected. Analysts were forecasting 5 million at the low end, and 7.75 million at the high end.

The stock is up ~6% on the news.

Last year Apple sold 5 million iPhone 5s during the opening weekend, so this is a huge increase.

The new iPhone drew huge, enthusiastic crowds and long lines when it was released last Friday, despite the fact that there were no external changes to the device. Part of the reason there were big lines is that the company didn't allow pre-orders of the new iPhone 5S. Another part of the reason: People like iPhones.

Apple is mostly sold out of the iPhone 5S, which suggests this number would have been even higher if Apple had enough phones in stock.

Apple's 9 million units include both iPhone 5S and iPhone 5Cs. Apple didn't break out how many units of the iPhone 5S it sold or how many iPhone 5Cs it sold. Total iPhone sales were likely boosted by the new 5C model, which didn't exist last year.

The reports of Apple’s demise is greatly exaggerated.

The iPhone 5C is just an iPhone 5 in a new plastic case, with a couple of improvements. Apple has always discounted the previous model when they roll out a new one.

It would be interesting if you could figure out how many "new" buyers bought the 5C, but wouldn't have bought a 5 under the same conditions, and wouldn't have bought a 5S if even if it was available.

It's also a bit harder to compare this launch to the previous launch, because they have additional countries participating in the launch this year.

Nine Million new Iphones? Hmmmm, I find that very interesting indeed. I would really like to look at the statistical details on how many of these had a trade-in of an older model Iphone.

But in any case, I’m happy for Apple in meeting their goals.

The numbers are up because Apple, for the first time, included China in the opening numbers. Also, I believe there were no pre-orders this time so that juiced the numbers as well.

I own a 4s and am disappointed that Apple really didn't upgrade anything. It's the same stale size and features with a fingerprint scanner. Yes, I understand that it's now 64-bit and faster, but it will take another year or so to even be able to take advantage of this — just in time for another upgrade.

The 5s is just not worth the upgrade, IMO. There are better options now out there.

Typical bi-blog headline.

You “exceed” expectations if you do better than anticipated.

If you “crush” something, well, that’s a bad thing. Not really sure how you “crush” an expectation, though.’

Like I said, stupid bi-blog headline.

Sorta, you're an Appleite...is this planned obsolescence on steroids? Seems like they come out with a newbie about twice a year now.

There are plenty of other smartphones, but they don’t work as smoothly as the iPhone.

Used to be a Droid fan, but I am content to lose Flash on my iPhone 5 since it actually runs well, doesn’t lag or lock up, and is reliable.

My previous Android devices were all cheap pieces of junk that were slow despite having all the right specs.

Apple may not offer the moon on their devices, but they take the time to make sure it works.

Samsunk and Motorolled don’t.

Yes! Yes! Yes! So very happy for pro-capitalism today. I know some of you are weary of Apple and their capitalism, but I say “Thank God For Apple and the United States of America!”

As for upgrading? No. I am fine with the 5. That’s the nice thing about the iPhone and Apple in general, including my four-year-old Macbook Pro.

They normally (unless you do something to screw them up) run almost like new for years.

My Dells and Gateways would slow down to almost unusable speeds after about two years of use. And yes, I have virus software and wasn’t doing things that should have slowed them down.

Now, my Macbook Pro acts like it is only maybe six months old instead of three.

You are right about the 5c specs, but they are taking a different marketing approach now. Before, they just continued to market the old model at a lower price to broaden their reach in competition with the wide array of android and windows phones out there. Now they are essentially creating a more marketable product that they can not just push as a low cost alternative at the carriers stores and websites, but a full fledge brand that they can run ads and promote like their competitors. Plus, with the different colors, they can probably attract younger buyers and female buyers who before might go with the playful new android at the cheaper price before instead of last years apple model. Of nothing else, apple knows marketing, and they were definitely taking hits the past year or row as their competition has improved.

These are very true words. I’ve had an identical experience to yours. People too rarely comment on Apple device simplicity, quality and reliability.

I grew up during the 8 bit microcomputer days, and was a Commodore guy, absolutely detested apple. Sadly Commodore’s Founder retired and his replacement mismanaged the company into the ground.

Apple survived, and my disdain for them did not abate until very recently.

I don’t consider myself a fan boy by any stretch, but MS has always sucked but at one point was driving technology, and Bahlmer destroyed it long ago. HP used to be a driver but Carly Fiorina and the board that mandated an affirmative action hire and then refused to admit their mistake destroyed that one as a serious player as well.

Jobs for his ills and there were many many ills, and many many failures, at least GOT technology and seems to have built a company that culturally knows what it needs to do. the fear will be now that he is gone, will Apple continue where it needs to to stay at the top, or will as often happens the bean counters take over and drive it into mediocrity?

As long as you aren’t one of the folks who gets screwed in an OS upgrade, then you will fight the monster and largely be ignored if the problem isn’t big enough for Apple to decide to address it.

Just spent the entire weekend dealing with OSx upgrade issues and IOS7 breaking code that worked perfectly fine because Apple loves to just change things for whatever whims it has. I figure I’ll spend at least another 2 days rewriting code just to deal with their issues.

Apple strives for a high bar, but they are not perfect.
