But the bootcamp doesn’t require the volunteer hours does it?

No, as far as I know it doesn’t. It meets 3 times, near end of January and twice in February. A Master Gardener working off volunteer hours told me that it is an overview and is not the Master Gardener program. I know that at this point I could probably use a good overview! I don’t want to make any more mistakes and murder any more good guy species!

I haven’t talked with my county to see if they have anything like that happening any closer to us. The one I learned about at the Fair would require about a 3.5 hour round trip each time to participate. Worth it if we can put it together, but if anything is happening closer, it would be great!

I think it varies according to the area /State. The Master Gardiner Program I participated in asked for 2-3 hours per week answering gardening questions;
some programs wanted interested people to develeope inner-city (veggie/flower ), or highway gardens.
No harm in phoneing them and asking aobut it !
Speaking from out-dated expierience, I got the equivelent of 3 college level courses in horticulture ,
for volunteering for 4 -6 months (midApril - October).
