Men lose interest in fashion trends and being 'cool' at the age of 46, a new survey has revealed.
But women put the effort in for a full 13 years longer - focusing on their appearance and general fitness until at least age 59.
The research also found women were nearly twice as likely to lack confidence in their image, with more than one third unable to claim they were at least content with their appearance.
It also emerged one third of the 2,000 men and women who took part in the study blamed a lack of happiness in contributing to their low confidence levels in the way they look.
More than half of those surveyed said they aren't in great shape physically while a third admit they have never been the type to bother with doing exercise.
Another third stop caring about the food they eat and how much alcohol they drink.

In a related development, studies show women get married 13 years older than men.
LOL! I think there’s a law that says at some point it’s okay.
A neat magazine for those of us who "remember when":
Finally, I’m ahead of my time! I’m a 56 year old woman and I gave up years ago.
Women used to wear scarves or hats and men used to wear fedoras................(sigh)............
“I was completely spoiled by my first plane trip, 1962, off to college in CA flying first class on TWA from Logan. Everybody, men and women, dressed to the nines. Women in dresses and heels, men in jackets and ties (including yours truly, of course).
My room-mate and I had a nice little round table to ourselves and a fresh deck of cards, passing a pleasant five hours playing gin and enjoying the cocktails that magically kept appearing. And smoking, smoking non-filtered Camels.
Aw metesky, you’re making me all weepy here. Those were great days.
They even served meals on real dishes if I recall. My first flight was from Logan to OKC in 1954.We still had the blasted seams in our stockings, but we wore them because it was appropriate.I’m sitting here now in jeans and an Original Six tee.Old lady comfort.
Ciao !
.
No, the image came thru OK...it was the image of a blind date with Hitlery Flowerchild I was trying to block out...shiver
Just saw “PRISONERS”.... Wow Wow Wow....
Very funny. He never owned a polyester leisure suit. Didn't like them. He was a rebel against the rebels back in the day: Civil Air Patrol, short hair, no drugs, yada, yada.
He's fitting into dress pants and shorts. He's shrunk out of all of his jeans and khakis and is aiming for a 30-year-old, navy blue, pinstripe suit and the gangster (NOT gangsta) look.
Now that I think about it that suit is about 34/35 years old.
Weird. I did quite worrying about my looks 4 years ago.
I just quietly accepted that I’m handsome and can’t do a thing about it.
Still, I’m grateful to be alive.
I went to my 45th High School reunion on 3 Aug 13. I had three different women tell me “You are the classiest person in the whole room”. I needed that ego boost. I told them “Because I am a Freeper.” The one women said when I left her house the next day she couldn’t walk, according to my best friend, who lives in that town. (Sigh)I’m glad I left there 45 years ago.
Nowadays they wear pajamas and house slippers to the store..............but Walmart DOES have some good deals.
“I shop at Kohls and Target for clothes.”
Goodwill for ModelBreaker. I get great stuff there cheap. 50% off today for seniors :)
“I must admit to being old-fashioned. I care about what I wear, to a degree.”
Neat and clean is good. Shaved and hair trimmed is good. A nice suit when I’m speaking in front of people is good. But fashion trends are stupid, pop-culture crap. The author confuses not caring about how you look with caring about fashion.
Maybe I should get a random word tattooed on my neck?? That would be cool and prove I care about my appearance.
Nothing says high fashion like a tin foil helmet.
My mom would talk about going into a retirement home, but it always came down to “but then I would have to get spruced up every time I went down for a meal”.
She passed away at home just the other week at the age of 95. But she had a neighbor gal come in once a week up until a few days before she died to look presentable.
It does sound like your mom lived a wonderful, sensible life. My prayers are with you as you adjust to her moving on.
