Richard C. Sarafian, a Hollywood director best known for the speed-addled saga of squealing brakes and existential angst chronicled in the 1971 cult film "Vanishing Point," died Wednesday. He was 83.
Sarafian was recovering from a broken back when he contracted pneumonia, family members said.
He directed numerous films and, earlier in his career, TV shows that included episodes of "Gunsmoke," "The Twilight Zone" and "Batman." He also acted, appearing as hitman Vinnie in the Warren Beatty satire "Bulworth" and gangster Jack Dragna in Beatty's "Bugsy."

I saw Vanishing Point at the Prairie Lake Drive In, Altamonte Springs, FL. Smoked a lot of cigarettes (too many) and did a lot of making out (not enough) there in the late 60s.

RIP Mr Sarafian. Took a date to see Vanishing Point back in high school days. We were at a drive-in theater and everyone who left that night just had to peel-out when we left. At the time I thought it was a great film. Saw it again recently and the biggest star of the movie was the Dodge Challenger and the uh, hippie chick out in the desert ;o)

That was the best movie.

I’ve seen that movie at least 50 times over the years, and I’ll watch again, I’m sure. Every time I see it, I slip right back the to first time I watched.
RIP Richard Sarafian.
Drive on, Kowalski. We’re still out here.

I watched the movie again the other day. Mr. Sarafian did a lot with the $5.00 funding he was able to raise. Couldn’t help but be freaked out by the clothes and Newman’s haircut—or lack of haircut. RIP, Mr. Sarafian.

That’s a good flick. Saw it years ago on late night TV — back in the day when movies all night were a novelty.

What was the drive in off 441 near the cement plant just before Lockhart? I don’t remember a drive in in the Altamonte area...

She never seems to make much of an appearance in the “TV” edited versions.

Ri-Mar? Sure strikes a cord. Haven't thought of that in donkey years.
Prairie Lake was on 436 between 17-92 and the railroad tracks that are just before the Longwood Avenue intersection. I believe it was the south side of 436.
