Child beauty pageants may soon be banned in France, after a surprise vote in the French Senate that rattled the pageant industry and raised questions about how the French relate to girls' sexuality.
Such contests, and the made-up, dolled-up beauty queens they produce, have the power to both fascinate and repulse, and have drawn criticism in several countries. France, with its controlling traditions, appears to be out front in pushing an outright ban.

“Thank heaven, for little girls.” —Maurice Chevalier
Honey Boo Boo? Non! Non!
Yeah, to Hell with free speech and free association!
Pardon me, but could you tell me why was the picture that I posted in comment #1 that was grabbed from the Fox News article deleted? If I broke some sort of rule I’d like to avoid doing so in the future.
>>Good for the French. Maybe there is hope for them yet.<<
Agreed. I have seen these (well for a few seconds) and seen interviews with mothers who say “it isn’t me forcing little (6 year old) Sally — she LOVES to do this!”
Same for the commercuials for “Dance Moms and the similar offshoots.”
These things are kiddie porn, pure and simple.
Parents who participate should be prosecuted for child abuse and human trafficking.
>>Yeah, to Hell with free speech and free association!<<
Parading little girls around dressed like whores is pornography and prostitution.
Someone needs to protect the children.
So they’re letting adults fondle, molest and have sex with those girls and taking payments for doing so? Isn’t that already illegal? And if they’re not, how is that either “pornography” or “prostitution” in any way, shape or form? I might find it mildly offensive and distasteful, but I sure wouldn’t tell a parent not to do it. Where does that end? I don’t like you shooting with your kids, so I label it child abuse? If I’m an atheist, so your teaching your children about religion is brainwashing and should be made illegal? Slippery slope, my man. And believe me, there are already people trying to get my hypothetical situations made into law, here and in Europe.
Roman Polanski is deeply saddened at this possibility.

>>So theyre letting adults fondle, molest and have sex with those girls and taking payments for doing so? <<
So, naked little girls are perfectly OK? If people pay for naked pictures of little girls it is called “kiddie porn” and can be prosecuted that way.
The outfits they squeeze these poor girls into, combined with the whore makeup, are as sexually suggestive (if not more so).
>>Slippery slope, my man<<
Conservatism is not libertarianism. We prosecute kiddie porn dealers and producers already so the line is drawn. If we apply the “reasonable man” standard to these pageants, we come away with properly classifying them as porn.
Note: I am applying existing laws, not suggesting we invent new ones (which would be what your examples require).
If you are for repealing kiddie porn laws, that is an entirely different discussion (I am not suggesting you are).
Our biggest Conservative moral battle is the conflation of freedom and license.
Thank you for the explanation. One more question, if you'd be so kind: I see pictures posted all the time in threads (heck, there's already one posted further down-thread). If one isn't supposed to post a picture from the original article, just when is it all right to do so? Is it ok to post just about any other picture (within the bounds of good taste)?
LOL !!! Now that’s funny !!!
HOLY CRAP!!!
Well, we can only have some expectations of the French...
>>Kiddy porn is right, the only ones that watch the show are pedophiles. Six year old girls dressing slutty is not the normal cup of tea for normal people. But it gets the sickos off...<<
My point exactly. Until the JonBenét case, I didn’t even know they existed.
Now they run commercials for “Dance Moms” and that looks as bad or worse.
What the heck have we, as a society, come to when we hyper-sexualize little children and then hide behind “free speech?”
