Word For The Day, Wednesday, 9/18/13

portend; verb

Etymology: early 15c., from L. portendere "foretell," originally "to stretch forward," from por- (variant of pro-) "forth, forward" + tendere "to stretch, extend" (see tenet). Online Etymology Dictionary, © 2010 Douglas Harper

that is one GINORMOUS cow phote! ROROR!
My check tire pressure message is on all the time - obviously the computer is wrong but it bugs me anyway
if it was my car and i was used to it, i would have been ok. But xshub is out of town, and wasn’t answering his phone this AM when i was trying to call to ask him what to do with it. All i know is that one time, with his MKZ, the check tire light was on, he was in the HOSPITAL, and i was taking xsbaby to school and i ended up with a flat on the side of the road right by the Pentagon, waiting for Triple A to show up and the shoulder wasn’t very wide and it was AM rush hour traffic and i was sweating getting hit by passing traffic. Because i had the bad experience there, i was leery of just totally blowing this off.
The one in my mom’s car is always on, too. But that’s because we have regular old-school tire valves in a couple of the tires. No sensors = unhappy computer.

I went back to Ohio.
But my city was gone.
The Next Fed ChairmanCiting certainty of an "acrimonious" confirmation process, Lawrence Summers withdrew his name from consideration to be Barack Obama's Federal Reserve Chairman, leaving leftists one fewer of their own on the list of contenders. Ironically, much of the opposition to Summers' appointment came from his own camp, with liberals accusing him of supporting financial deregulation during his tenure as Bill Clinton's Treasury Secretary in the 1990s.
Just because one leftist is out of the running, though, doesn't make the Fed Chairmanship any safer. And with current Fed Vice Chair Janet Yellen now a leading contender for the top job, this may be a classic case of jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire. Many Senate Democrats are lining up behind Yellen, even signing a letter to Obama urging her appointment. And Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) praised Yellen's "great experience" and "great judgment" and said she would make a "terrific" chair. But then, that's hardly a reassuring endorsement given the source. Indeed, while Summers' withdrawal is good news, it doesn't portend better. After all, truth be told, our financial system in the hands of any Obama nominee is a frightening thought. Yes, mine comes on all the time. Irks the crap out of me.
Still gray here-hope we may get more nice, slow rain from the two tropical storms converging to the far south...
The rumblings we are hearing
May portend a resounding “no”
For yet more foolish spending
To fund another traveling show
And if the government stops
Giveaways for just awhile
As the mob is whining
The rest of us will smile
It could even save billions
If it went for a month or two-
The more I think about it
It seems like the thing to do...
FWIW, even though you pump your own gas bc you dont live in Jersey....you pull into a gas station....unbutton a button or two and act all Alicia Silverstone, and get someone to do it for you.
Fcol, you got game ;)
I don’t blame you at all for being leery - I was constantly checking mine at first and just need to take it in for an adjustment - One day on a highway it read 1 psi and I pulled over just certain that it was flat, and it wasn’t.... so I quit worrying after that. But I LOVE the feature that tells you how your tires are inflated - great idea (when it is working!)
Is it the Nissan in the commercial that beeps at you when you are filling the tire and it is full?
That’s ingenious.
A++++
Look at them copying me!
And I love the run on flat tires!!
Since you said Sophomoronic, let me say...
I only make the pinky tip looking parts rise, but there are a zillion plastic surgeons...that do the whole thing.
Portends
During a meeting of the Brown Paper Bag Crew the Chairman arose from his seat on the kerb and proclaimed, “When the port ends, we go for the Old Tooth Cracker Ale.”
Yikes. I need to learn to shrink. The pic I copied was less than 1/4 that size! Sorry everyone.
