2 weeks left, playoff races sizzle (Baseball Live Thread)

THE WILD SIDE: It's a scramble for the two AL wild-card spots, with a half-dozen teams trying to claim them. Texas, Cleveland and Tampa Bay are at the top, but wobbling.

Pinch-hitter Justin Morneau's single sent Pittsburgh over the Cubs 3-2 Sunday, leaving the Pirates even with St. Louis for the NL Central lead.

WHAT'S THE FORECAST?: Wicked weather always seems to wreak havoc at the end of the season. Cleveland waited out a rain delay of nearly 4 1/2 hours in Chicago before beating the White Sox 7-1 Sunday night. Just watch - somewhere, a storm will sweep into another stadium at the most inopportune time.

Wash is there because of Ryan...Ryan can’t admit his mistake now.

Then Ryan could very sink with the ship, so to speak.

I don’t think Ryan will be back.....I think he was ready to leave but they talked him out of it.

I grew up near Boston and absolutely loved Ted Williams. And absolutely hated the Yankees!

Then I married NJ and became a solid Mets fan. No way could I root for the Ys. Only good thing about them is their clean shaven look. Even with the mess the Mets are in, I love them.

CJ WIlson today in a meaningless game, LAA vs SEA
123 pitches. With expanded rosters. He won’t be pitching vs the A’s this week.

what does it all mean?

All the Angels care about now is spoiling it for the Rangers, they want that one badly.

Why would teams who are eliminated care about how their starting pitching matches up with contenders?

A’s and Braves clinch.

As for Ventura, I don’t know. Nate Jones shouldn’t have been pitching at all yesterday, they should be evaluating rookie relievers.

“Why would teams who are eliminated care about how their starting pitching matches up with contenders?”

Agreed. LAA is trying to avoid having a losing record; Scioscia’s job may depend on it, contract or not.

Looks like Ventura’s coming back: http://www.csnchicago.com/white-sox/ventura-hopes-manage-sox-beyond-2014

“Why would teams who are eliminated care about how their starting pitching matches up with contenders?”

Wait a minute ... when LAA plays Oakland, they don’t care because the games mean nothing to them? Yet, when they play SEA, they care so much they want CJ Wilson to go 123 pitches. Do I got it now?

Some teams do not do that. They play their call ups vs the eliminated teams and use their A-Team vs. the contending teams. LAA hasn’t been making the playoffs lately, their players need the “playoff experience” and the Oakland and Texas series give them that opportunity. The only opportunity they are going to have. The O’s played the BoSox in 2011 as if they were playoff games. Supposedly helped them in ‘12 when they got there for real.

Besides, common sense. Why does the baseball world wanna watch Dice-K pitch for the METS against CINN this week when he could be bumped to the next day? I STAND BY MY THEORY.

IF PER chance TEX gets that far:
Yu Darvish will be unavailable for the 10-2 wildcard game. He will pitch on SUN cuz TEX will not have clinched.

on the other hand
Pitt: Liriano
TB: Price
will pitch in the wildcard game.

I am not sure who the preferred starter is for CINN and CLE at this point. THey seem to have no obvious ace right now.

A's are in anyway, if it meant keeping them out maybe they'd give a damn, keep a division rival out, but at this point seeding is all that at stake for the A's. Don't ask me why Wilson threw so many pitches, that was dumb managing for an eliminated team, I guess they were just trying to give him a chance to get the win. I wouldn't put unnecessary miles on my starter's arms at the end of a lost year.

I didn't know Ron Washington was the Angels' new manager.

is the excitement gone a bit? We are basically down to 11 teams for 10 spots, so it all about seeding and watching Texas eliminate themselves.

We had quite a large response on day one ... do we start a new thread or Keep this thread going?

NOTES:
NYY ... Sabathia injured, Huff on THUR.
Wildcard tiebreakers:
PITT-CINN is 8-8 with 3 remaining games next weekend.
TB over CLE over TEX which has tiebreaker over TB
TEX 5-8, TB 7-6, CLE 7-5 FOR THE 3-way tie.

summary: it will be CLE @ TB in case of a tie. I’d like to see the game played in CLE.
