2 weeks left, playoff races sizzle (Baseball Live Thread)

THE WILD SIDE: It's a scramble for the two AL wild-card spots, with a half-dozen teams trying to claim them. Texas, Cleveland and Tampa Bay are at the top, but wobbling.

Pinch-hitter Justin Morneau's single sent Pittsburgh over the Cubs 3-2 Sunday, leaving the Pirates even with St. Louis for the NL Central lead.

WHAT'S THE FORECAST?: Wicked weather always seems to wreak havoc at the end of the season. Cleveland waited out a rain delay of nearly 4 1/2 hours in Chicago before beating the White Sox 7-1 Sunday night. Just watch - somewhere, a storm will sweep into another stadium at the most inopportune time.

I gotta think his job is in danger if they don’t make it, Nolan Ryan says it’s not though.

I feel bad for the Rangers.

“I was torn when the Yanks and Phils were in the World Series against each other a few years back...”

Indeed.

“Seeing the Cleveland Indians doing some post season work will be fun...”

Yes. Tito Francona is da man!

Speaking of former Red Sox, Matsusaka, he of the 5.52 ERA got his second win (vs. 3 loses) last night. 5.52...yikes!!!

“” Odorizzi pitched 3 2/3 one-hit innings of relief - all in extra innings - in the Rays 5-4, 18-inning victory over the Orioles Friday night/Saturday morning. This came just three days after Odorizzi started for Triple-A Durham in the national championship game.

change of plans: Maddon said they’re unsure of who will start Sunday, now that scheduled starter, RHP Jeremy Hellickson, threw the final 2 1/3 innings Friday to pick up the win.

Hellickson said Hickey came up to him in the 13th and asked him how long it’d take for him to get ready.

Though Hellickson threw 41 pitches, making it unlikely he’ll make his start Sunday, he wouldn’t rule it out. “I’m not going to say ‘no’ right now,” he said. “”

18 innings. Strategically, I have to question the benefits of blowing out pitching staffs to get the “win”.

If I was managing, I would have thrown the game and saved my pitching staff for the rest of the season; this could have a negative domino effect for both teams.

My 2 cents...

If Ryan doesn't run Washington out of town on a rail; he's an idiot.

“...Yanks and Phils were in the World Series...”

Would have been nice to see the hometown boys win back to back World Series, but it wasn’t in the stars...

“The Gods of Sports” have determined that Philly only gets a championship every couple of decades... whether it’s the Flyers (1973 and 1974); Phillies (1950, 1980, 2008)...

sigh...

But I wasn’t sad that the Yanks won... Either way it was a win for me.

Wash is Ryan’s boy.....Ryan was the one who decided to keep Wash after he was busted for Coke.

Big mistake, they had Clint Hurdle as an assistant coach at the time, he could have easily slid into the managerial role, as evidenced by what he’s done in Pittsburgh.

Rays have 16 pitchers on their current roster of 34 players.
Two relief pitchers did not pitch last nite.

impossible to blow out a 16-man pitching staff .... just disrupts it for a few days.

Baltimore was playing for its life last nite. They have a 16-man staff, too, and did not use their other 4 starters.

Norris had not pitched in 12 days & then comes back and gets thrown into that situation:

“Would have been nice to see the hometown boys win back to back World Series, but it wasn’t in the stars...”

It would’ve. I was rooting for PHI that year because the owner(s) of PHI are GOP as I recall; the Gay Rays backed Obama that year (2008).

Still waiting for the Eagles to win...not happening this year. So much for that “revolutionary” Chipster offense, eh?

“But I wasn’t sad that the Yanks won... Either way it was a win for me.”

Unlike most NE’ers, I don not hate the Yankees; I respect George Steinbrenner for being a Republican, which is the direct opposite of the leftist loons that own the Red Sox.

I respect the Yankees for winning and spending money despite claims that it’s not fair.

Cubs stop Atlanta from clinching.

Tigers score 6 in the 9th and win in extras over the dead sox. Chris Sale has a 2.97 ERA (5th best in AL) and a 11-13 record. I wouldn’t mention another boner by that team but this was bad enough to tick me off.

Rays win again, Indians, Rangers, Yankees, do as well

Impy, the word for the day is: Renny Romero
not Fausto Carmero

SEA and LAA finish the season with all games vs contenders ... yet today CJ Wilson and Felix Hernandez in a pitching matchup. WOuldn’t want Felix to face the A’s tomorrow or anything.

Why did ChiSox manager leave Jones in the game so long in the 9th vs. DET?

I’ll second that.

I hope Impy’s boys slaughter Sh*ttsburgh (Trestman power!). Might watch some SFO-IND later; couldn’t care less about Pawts-Tampa.

I’m scratching TEX off my AL playoff list and replacing them with CLE.

I’ll watch the Breaking Bad finale.

Impy, the word for the day is: Enny Romero
Gave up 1 hit, no runs in 4 2/3 for TB in his MLB debut. A fifth inning error by 3B with 2 outs prevented him from getting the official win.
the joke of the day is Brian Flynn
Turns out that the joke of the day is the Nationals.
The ChiSox did their job today. win to Erik Johnson, rookie.
Oakland is completing a 4-game sweep of the Twins. Twinkee disgrace.
PITT: what is wrong with Locke?
BOSTON: Will Doubront be left off the playoff roster?
It is a near=death experience for BALT & NYY

Wise move. No playoffs for the cokehead. Watch the Astros sweep them.

Report saying Washington is safe: Via twitter: Ken Rosenthal‏@Ken_Rosenthal: #Rangers GM Daniels on whether Wash is in trouble. “The answer is no.” Calls issue a distraction. No substance, not under consideration. Does Nolan Ryan overrule his GM and makes the move?
