As automakers race to make cheaper electric cars with greater battery range, General Motors is working on one that can go 200 miles per charge at a cost of about $30,000, a top company executive said.
Vice President of Global Product Development Doug Parks wouldnt say when or if such a car will be built, however.
The 200-mile car would cost about the same as the current Volt, and it would match the range and be far cheaper than Tesla Motors $71,000, all-electric Model S. The Model S can go up to 265 miles on a single charge.

Wow..a 200 mile electric car...
How do you get around corners....?
Hey, that’s what the headline says.....!
“Mileage may vary if you use...
the Air Conditioner,
or the heater,
or the radio,
or the windows,
or the GPS,
or the headlights......
Yeah, or drive over 30mph. I’m wondering what my mileage per charge would be on one of my periodic trips from Dallas to El Paso - at 70+mph, with ac cranked up and sound system blasting. My guess is I might make it to Weatherford.....
In 2011, the BBC did an article on driving an EV Mini from London to Edinburgh, Scotland, in just four DAYS. In 1830, the express coach between the two cities got job done in two days with 50 stops to change horses (2 minutes per stop). The total time the coach was idle was about 1.5 hours out of 48.
Go here for the details of this electric vehicle adventure in impracticality: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/comment/columnists/christopherbooker/8262095/London-to-Edinburgh-by-electric-car-it-was-quicker-by-stagecoach.html
"Up to" are the key words here.
...and electricity is free?
Blah blah blah.
This is more old style nonsense.
The VOLT is actually a unique car, in that it runs on gas or batteries.
It’s not yet efficient, but I give the VOLT praises for the combination.
The VOLT will be improved, and will continue to approach a good marketing cross at some time.
Not this thing.
I had an ‘89 Jetta diesel that would go 750+ miles on a full tank. I bought it for $250 with 100K miles on it and drove it another 200K miles with no major repairs. Most practical car I’ve ever owned.
no, but the effective price
of gasoline is four to ten times that of electricity
How much tax dollars will they get for this one??
or even if its cold
electricity is used by almost everyone.
e. is a lot harder for politicians to go after and punish its users.
gasoline is used pretty much only by motorists,
so is an easy target for their hate.
