FULL TITLE: REVEALED: Gunman, 34, who murdered TWELVE and injured 15 in Washington Navy Yard rampage was decorated petty officer who left military in 2011 after previous gun charge
While the motive of Aaron Alexis, the heavily armed gunman who shot dead at least 12 people in cold blood this morning at the Washington Navy Yard has not been revealed, speculation is growing his dismissal from the U.S. Navy for 'misconduct' in January 2011 may have inspired him to commit a deadly revenge.
Alexis, 34, has been revealed to have a prior arrest for letting a gun off that could have harmed his neighbor while he cleaned his own weapon at home in Fort Worth, Texas, 2010.
Despite the lack of acknowledged motive, one U.S. official has been quoted as saying Alexis was kicked out of the Navy in 2011 for 'misconduct' as a direct result of his gun arrest three years ago.
Law enforcement said that Alexis' identity was confirmed by fingerprints and that he served in the U.S. Navy between May 5th, 2007 and January 31st, 2011, the date he was dismissed from the service.
He was awarded the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal prior to his discharge in January 2011.
A U.S. Navy spokesman said that Alexis was an 'aviation electrician's mate' - ranked as a third class petty officer and served at the Naval Air Station in Fort Worth, Texas.

He is reported to have enlisted in New York and the Brooklyn native graduated from boot camp at Great Lakes, Illinois as an Airman Recruit.

It's a tad bit complicated. Upon completion of basic training he was an Airman Recruit. In Basic everyone is Seaman Recruit. You can not as far as I know hold a higher rank in Basic. Recruit is E-1.
From there he is what is called a Striker or was when I was in. You either go to A-School or you go to Apprentice Training for either the Airman, Fireman, Seaman specialty fields. AT is basically an indoctrination course of about 4 weeks. From there you go to your new command. An E-2 is called an Apprentice.
If the E-1 or E-2 has not gone to A-School he is either an Airman, Fireman, or Seaman Recruit or Apprentice depending if E-1 or E-2. You usually get E-2 rank at six months it simply takes a request Chit. If you don't go to A school then you must choose what specialty you want to Strike for. Or the Department Head sometimes decides. For example if you complete A school for a Machinist Mate you would be either a MMFA or MMFN upon completion. The other way without school is to do the Personnel Qualification Requirements and test for your desiring Rating {specialty}. A Fireman wanting to be a Machinist Mate would study the Machinist Mate Book and take the test. You can go up to E-3 as a non rated enlisted.
E-4 in the Navy begins the NCO Ranks and you must have completed a specialty requirement for your specialty and qualified at specific task to take the test for E-4. If you pass and are promoted your Pre-Fix would go to the rating abbreviation such as MM, EM, ABH, etc 3 or MM3, ABH3, EM3.
Being an E-4 at four years is normal. A few make E-5 in four used too when I was in. I did 4 years active and came out E-4. If you can get an A school after Basic it's a lot easier to make E-5 in four years. Otherwise it's OJT and study on your own.

The MSM obviously doesn’t understand that those two medals are given to everyone in attendance .... unless the Navy has really slid downhill (John Kerry-Heinz level), I doubt seriously that he was considered a “decorated petty officer”.

I’d say his final discharge rank wasn’t E-4 either. To get less than Honorable DC {Conduct Wise} takes going before The Old Man at a minimal first and usually a Court Martial to follow. Or rather it used to be anyway. I’d say he lost some rank. The Old Man can only reduce you one rank each Captain’s Mast.

I think someone said he was an AE Aviation Electronics Technician, That is and advanced rate and he should have been an E5 within a few years.
I was taking and passing the E6 test within 6 years.
