Here in southern New Jersey(’’ the shore area’’ where I live) we have the green colored species, beautiful little buggers, well, they’re big actually. My wife loves them because they eat the bugs that go after her rose bushes and her other plants. I’ve always thought they’re just about the coolest looking insects going.( They’re from the family of beetles, the most numerous of insects species.) Funny thing about this picture to me is that the mantis I always see don’t have black eyes. They’re a kind of light brown or beige.
Friend, years ago I did demolition work in NYC , tearing down and renovating old buildings. Been down below Manhattan and the Bronx in some funky old buildings and I saw cockroaches, that flew, and were about as big as a damned sparrow, I kid you not. Hit them things with a shovel and they’d keep moving. You had to wallop them ugly ass things two or three times before they stopped moving.
The only insect that can turn its head without turning the rest of its body.
Man, we are ate up with those things this year! I chalk it up to all the rain this summer.
AAGH! That’s disgusting! (shudder) If one of those things landed on me, I’d run in circles, screaming.
(Bug phobia, in case you couldn’t tell)
I worked at a gas station and a Mantis took up residence in the garage. We would run around catching bugs to feed it. It even had a name which I cant recall. That thing lived like a king.
