Survive the apocalypse in style: Home that boasts a luxury bunker 26 feet underground with fake grass and simulated night and day

• House constructed in 1970s underground with three bedrooms and a 'fake' outdoors

• 'Outside' landscaping consists of trees, grass, rocks, a pool and even scenery with rolling hills and meadows in the distance

• House for sale for $1.7 million after it fell into forclosure

From the street, number 3970 Spencer St. near Flamingo Road looks like any other American home.

It's what lies beneath that would pique your interest.

During the Cold War, there was a time when some paranoid (or maybe just careful) Americans decided to construct underground nuclear bunkers.

In a scene reminiscent of the 1999 film 'Blast from the Past' where a family lives in a fallout shelter for 35 years, a family home has just come on the market for $1.7 million dollars.

The only difference with this home is that it has a 15,200 sq ft basement underground.

The house was built in 1978 to withstand a nuclear blast by wealthy businessman, Girard 'Jerry' B. Henderson.

The pool in my backyard happens to be a Catalina pool. Although my house doesn’t have an underground bomb shelter... it does have a rather large lower level “pool” bathroom that is cinderblock on all four walls, and looks to have a concrete ceiling. We’ve often joked that it was probably a bomb shelter of some sort. My home was custom built in 1957, the pool was added in 1959.

Beat me to it, I was going to say the underground part looks exactly like the one in that movie.

“I loved that movie.”

Me too. It is probably in my all time top ten list.

“Were school kids doing nuclear disaster drills as late as ‘78?”

I remember doing them at my “new school” in 3rd grade. that would have been 79-80....I don’t recall any drills in later grades.

“We never did those nuclear drills. We had tornado drills, and the procedure was basically the same.”

Not for us. We went to a pretty good enclosure for tornado drills, but just hid under our desks for nuclear drills. It was probably the equivelant of saying “bend over and kiss your a$$ good bye..”

;-)

I know we were still doing drills in school at that date (’78) for air raids.

Well that would be true if you lived in a likely target area. However, once you get out beyond a 25 mile radius, there’s a shot at survival if you can get sheltered from the radiation, take the iodine tablets, and stay sheltered for at least 2 weeks.

Can’t remember now, the number of feet of concrete you need, but IIRC 3 inches of steel does the trick. Your shelter has to have venting, but radiation can’t turn corners, so you just have to design stuff with that in mind.

I don’t think the tornado shelter would have been very effective for the tornado or the bomb, so It kinda was a waste of time.

Well, yes, but there are people around who can do that, that aren’t necessarily our friends either. I just know that I didn’t feel one bit safer after the Soviet Union came apart and went into chaos.
