PURCELLVILLE, Va. Its a startling contrast to some observers the glamorous, bikini-clad Miss America from 2011, Teresa Scanlan, finding her home at the tiny, super-conservative Patrick Henry College. The school requires students to dress modestly and seek parental counsel when pursuing a romantic relationship.
But the match has been a good one. Scanlan returned to campus in late August to begin her sophomore year. Among the things she loves about her classmates and her campus: Ive never had to sign an autograph, and Ive never had to take a picture. Here, I can be just another student, she said.
Blending in is not always easy for Scanlan, who won the Miss America Contest at 17, representing Nebraska. The youngest Miss America in more than 70 years, she spent a year fulfilling her duties and enrolled at Patrick Henry in 2012. She says the schools workload matched the grueling schedule as Miss America.

I’d say NOT GUILTY...!
Well, I hope she is taking courses from Hugh Akston, and not Dr. Robert Stadler.
I have to say, when I read the name of the university, I thought, “wasn’t that the name of the school that John Galt, Francisco, and Ragnar attended?”
I live in Purcellville, a small town with a population of around 3500 people. Until now our “famous face” resident was Madeline Halfbright. This is definitely an improvement and much easier on the eyes.
I thought the same.
Yep. Although theirs was Patric Henry University, rather than College.
There is an article somewhere at one of the Rand / objectivist websites discussing if Ayn based PHU on PHC. Embarrassed to admit that I can’t remember the conclusion of the article for certain, but I think the connection was tenuous, at best.
One of the very, very few decent colleges left in America.
One can hope.
These new electronics make me foolish at times...
I hate to say this, but her midsection looks rather masculine (and barely noticeable hips).
Never considered it.
I’d forgotten that the name of the university in Atlas Shrugged was Patrick Henry. It couldn’t have been named after this Patrick Henry College, which was established by and mainly for homeschool students only 13 years ago.
But, it’s interesting that the evangelical Christian Patrick Henry College and atheist Ayn Rand’s fictional university share the same name. She was a fan of Patrick Henry, too.
