Look for one with the lowest memory footprint, as they call it. I’ve tried several, and Avast fits my bill.

I'll throw in another vote for AVG. That's what I use. I've been using it for a while on several computers, so inertia is keeping me from changing -- there would have to be a substantial advantage, and I don't see one.

Avast! Hands down.
You're better off simply purchasing it. Also download Malwarebytes too.

My guy told me that Avast actually reads a page before it loads. Others do not. I don’t know if that is accurate or not.

Basically, none of them really work well, and virtually all will significantly depress system performance.
Your best bet is to set up a type of login account called a standard/limited account and use only that account for your work and use an administrative account type (the default) for any work involving new, removed, updated hardware or software.
There are certain viruses that can invade a standard/limited account, but they can’t damage the system and are easy to remove by logging off, going to the administrative account and running a scan from a program called antimalwarebytes.

You needc more that one, Doogie. I’ve got several, with Avast running all the time, others on request. I’ve found recently that SUPERAntiSpyware is the best program for wiping out tracking cookies, which all the others miss, or else delete all your cookies, or ask you to choose which to keep which to toss. CNET has good reviews of all such programs, but try to avoid downloading from there, as they wrap everything up in their own installer which carries free gifts of bloatware, adware and such.

BEST free antivirus/security program? Don't shag anyone you find in the County Hospital parking lot.
And don't click on blogs. It's the same damned thing.

AVG here...used it for years, and not a single problem.
(Have I told you I love your pics)? ;)
