I’ve been using it alone. What do you suggest combining it with?

I’ve used AVG and Adaware for years. They both seem to work. I try to do due diligence as a user and haven’t had a Virus or other malware for years.

Download.com has lots of free software and also has editor notes and user comments.

Basically, none of them really work well, and virtually all will significantly depress system performance.

Your best bet is to set up a type of login account called a standard/limited account and use only that account for your work and use an administrative account type (the default) for any work involving new, removed, updated hardware or software.

There are certain viruses that can invade a standard/limited account, but they can’t damage the system and are easy to remove by logging off, going to the administrative account and running a scan from a program called antimalwarebytes.

You needc more that one, Doogie. I’ve got several, with Avast running all the time, others on request. I’ve found recently that SUPERAntiSpyware is the best program for wiping out tracking cookies, which all the others miss, or else delete all your cookies, or ask you to choose which to keep which to toss. CNET has good reviews of all such programs, but try to avoid downloading from there, as they wrap everything up in their own installer which carries free gifts of bloatware, adware and such.

BEST free antivirus/security program?

Don't shag anyone you find in the County Hospital parking lot.

And don't click on blogs. It's the same damned thing.

AVG here...used it for years, and not a single problem.

(Have I told you I love your pics)? ;)

Man, if you need all that stuff, you might as well install Linux and be done with it....

I second that recommendation. Even though MS purchased it, they know their O/S better than anyone and it’s free, unless your Windows isn’t activated and is past the grace period.

MS SE and Malwarebytes should take care of your needs

Microsoft Security Essentials on my XP/SP3 - along with SuperAntiSpyware, and I run MalwareBytes manually every week or so. So far I’ve stayed clean, have had several warnings and blocks to scurrilous sites, and I traipse all over the net. You can’t rely on just one. Good luck.

If you were going to sneak in and take a picture of Krazy Kat, you could have just taken her with you. LOL

“Yeah, if you’re using Windows Me. ROFL!”

Microsoft Security Essentials isn’t that bad actually. I made the switch about 3 years ago and haven’t looked back. It’s not very intrusive and is updated frequently.

Prior to that I used AVG. I know several people that use Avast and like it.

I’d stay away from anything else :-). Too bloated and not worth the money.

FWIW I’ve never had a PC infected over the course of using AVG or MSE. I’m not one to run strange looking executables though :-).

AS an avid online gamer who needs an AV that doesn't try to stick its nose into what I'm doing every 10 minutes or so...

I've tried AVG, Avast, MSE, etc and they all slow things down or even minimize my game to the desktop just to inform me of an update.

I now use Panda Cloud Free and it works like a charm for online gaming.

I dunno, I always thought you get what you pay for.

For me, ESET, NOD 32.

Fire wall and virus for $40.00 bucks a year.
