Look for one with the lowest memory footprint, as they call it. I’ve tried several, and Avast fits my bill.

I'll throw in another vote for AVG. That's what I use. I've been using it for a while on several computers, so inertia is keeping me from changing -- there would have to be a substantial advantage, and I don't see one.

My guy told me that Avast actually reads a page before it loads. Others do not. I don’t know if that is accurate or not.
