Rumor: Windows 10 to become a cloud based OS

Microsoft Windows 10 might become a cloud based operating system (OS) according to a leaked road-map. The road-map shows that Microsoft will no longer release service packs but instead will release major updates every year which also increases the version number of the OS. The next major improvement should be Windows 9, this should bring back the Aero interface in a new form.

This should also be a version in which Microsoft will merge its ARM CPU based Windows RT platform with Windows Phone. This version of Windows could also be the last version of Windows as we know it.

According to the road-map is Microsoft planning to release Windows 10 with heavy cloud support, something Google is currently doing with ChromeOS. This means that many functionality on the computer no longer requires heavy hardware on the client side, lots of processing could be done on the servers of the cloud service.

Currently Microsoft is embedding their Skydrive cloud service in Windows 8, which is for e.g. Office the preferred option to store documents. For users this has the benefit that documents can be accessed from everywhere.

A cloud based OS has the benefit for Microsoft that it will limit piracy. Many parts of the OS will not run on the local computer but require to access the cloud where the actual software is running from. Benefits for users is that they always have up to date software and that they no longer need fast and expensive hardware. But since the rumors say that Windows 10 might be controlled using eyesight, new hardware might be a requirement to actually use the OS.

The roadmap has been posted on a Russian forum by an user of WZOR, the hacking group that was responsible for leaking Windows 7 RTM, Windows 8 RTM and Windows 8.1 RTM before their official release. The group allegedly has access to Microsoft internals which allows them to release software preliminary, this makes the rumor at least interesting.

That's the final nail for me.
It's been coming for a long time now.
But they love the jack boots more than my business.

Running at VT52 off a mainframe is a completely different affair...I actually wouldn’t mind returning to that... vi, pine... trade in World of Warcraft for a good MUD... chatrooms and instant messaging via party and talk.

The only thing missing will be the porn... hey wait... with MS-Win 10 on this cloud... will the “cloud” pull in all the naked selfies on every 17 year-old girl’s cellphone?

I’ve used microsofts hosted solution for my company’s CRM. It worked ok but of course required internet access to see my data.

What wasn’t ok was their billing practices. Four months in a row they billed me 10 times what I owed. Kind of a shock to suddenly be $2,500 short in the account. By the 4th month they got it down to only taking 10 days to return my money.

They didn’t see the issue since they always corrected it, even if it took up to two months. Yes they said that.

When you decide the cancel you will end up paying, even if you are at the end of the term. Cancel early and you pay significant fees. Oh and they take the payment but won’t even tell you how much you owe.

So now they want me to give them this control over my PC? Time for linux.

Dumb terminals, and dumber users.

The internet software will be updated so that our old systems will not function. And effectively cutoff unmonitored communications.

Why didn't someone see this coming?

All someone needs now is a virus that stops access to the cloud servers, and you are cutoff completely from your files...unless you pay the ransom.

Malware writers are salivating at the thought as we speak.

Yea, the six hours I spend on airlines every week - disconnected from the internet - don’t have to be productive. They can instead be wasted time.

That’s pretty much all Micoscam is these days anyway - wasted time.

Yeah, just the ability to access your data without the cloud.

And if you think that’s not going to provide the NSA access to your data you’re fooling yourself.

As long as that means some BS like integrating support for Azure - fine, who cares. If it involves something ridiculous like moving major OS services off the client, goodbye Windows - but I can't imagine them doing something that idiotic and arrogant.

Sure about that?

Well not literally, but then again, it doesn't make much difference.

I use Google Docs, and for what I need it for, it’s great....but I would never put anything mission-critical on it.

You know, I’m really happy with Win 7. I don’t like Win 8 and I’m not sure I’ll like Win 9 or 10 either.

“If they do that, I predict it’ll be the biggest shot in the arm ever for Linux, and it’ll be a cold day in the realm of double hockey sticks before I let Billy Gates grab me by my data. “

More like a win for Apple, I’m afraid. Linux never misses an opportunity to miss an opportunity.

In the 80’s as a telecom/data type we were referring to the cloud it is not a new concept.I remember investigating on line storage when NCR was absorbed and then let go by ATT.
