The pole, which is covered in grease and soap suds, is mounted on a barge in a bay so that it hangs at an angle over the water.
The contest, which dates back to the Middle Ages, is over when a contestant manages to snag a flag situated at the tip of the 10-meter (32-foot) pole.

On Evacuation Day, the British left their flag at the top of a greased pole in New York, where their army was headquartered. Maybe this tradition comes from something like that?

Yesterday I won a waterproof bible by sliding a large beer-stein to the edge of a beam. They put the bible in water to show it is waterproof and I was like wow I got to win that. It looked like i pushed too hard but when it got to the edge it suddenly stopped. :)
After, the police let us play with their van. My daughter turned on the siren and flashing lights.

I didn’t know either. It was an annual holiday in New York for long after, but because it was so close to the Thanksgiving Day that Lincoln popularized, it gradually lost its specialness, I guess. It’s been revived recently.
