I was thinking about the Miley Cyrus kerfuffle the other night while watching a Duck Dynasty marathon. I'm a recent convert to the show, being wary of most of what falls under the category "reality show." One can never be sure when treading into the dark waters of so-called "reality" TV that Miss Kay is at all different from Mama June.
Miley is taking a bit of a beating for her performance on MTV's Video Music Awards. While the backlash is understandable -- she is an adult and therefore responsible for her own behavior -- did she really even stand a chance, given her parents' willingness to dump her into the cesspool that is Hollywood?
Compare and contrast dads Billy Ray Cyrus and Willie Robertson: while both are Southern good ole boys, Billy Ray went Hollywood and Willie chose to stay backwoods. And there's the difference. Willie chose what is best for his family, while still being able to become an American success story. For the most part the Robertsons have kept it real -- that is, they've kept their lives family-centered, not celebrity-centered. Every show ends with the family seated around the dinner table in prayer. The message is very powerful, and the show's high ratings support that message.
On the other hand, Billy Ray, like many other stage moms and dads before him, pimped his daughter out to the highest bidder. He has thrown her to the wolves for his own gain, and they've devoured her with relish.
Another difference between Billy Ray Cyrus and Willie Robertson is that Billy Ray wants to be friends with his kids, as he himself expressed in an interview from six years ago with Glenn Beck. Billy Ray abdicated the role of dad in favor of the easier route.

We’d’a never even HEARD of Hannah Montana.
The Robertson boys would take Robin Thicke on a one way trip into the swamps. Gator bait. No cameras on that excursion.
An article that makes a relavant contrast. But the parenting story for Duck Dynasty hasn’t fully played out yet either. They too are celebrities, like it or not. I give those kids a better chance for the reasons stated in the article. I also give them a better chance because they likely have a stronger foundation of morals and values on which to rely.
But in the end, only time will tell.
They are just Rednecks with money. Willie knows it but Billie Ray pretends he is something else.
I have not been able to tolerate her song since before I knew it was hers (I'm a dip $#!+ I can do what I want).
If this was all about keeping her in the spotlight it has clearly accomplished that. Is she the heir to the Lohan legacy? Time will tell.
OTOH, it would be a mixed surprise to find out she is not a cheap little slut, but is simply willing to portray herself that way. What if she is intentionally misrepresenting herself before the millions of girls who grew up as her fans? It seems to me she would be saying "My fame is more important than all of you combined". In many ways, that is even worse.
Either way, this was one of the most pathetic things I have seen in a very long time.
LOL - They know the part they are playing, and they play it well. Ignorant and stupid are to very different things. I do not believe any of them are either one.
Additionally, they strike me as wise enough to know that if fame or money get in the way of who they are, they will not walk away... they will run.
That's two funny.
I like the show and I like the show's message. It's the only "modern" (read, post 1970) adult TV show I let my kids watch, without any qualms. And I like Phil. I aspire to be a curmudgeon like him.
However, the Robertsons get paid each week for doing what amounts to a 30 minute commercial for their business. It's watched - not just tolerated like a commercial, but really watched - by millions. Far more than any paid advertisement would.
Redneck doesn't mean "dumb", Jack. :-)
What she simply grew up period?
Interesting.
In my view, Miley Virus (aka Lydia Chlamydia) achieved EXACTLY what she set out to do.
A week later and people are still talking about her, even on FR.
RE: Weda never even HEARD of Hannah Montana.
And that’s a bad thing?
When calling people ignorant and stupid, you may want to proof check just to make sure it doesn’t hit you in the face.
Pray for America to Wake Up
I was thinking, if she’d been born into the “Pawn Stars” family, she’d still be pimped out, but they’d have got top dollar for her...
Miley (a stupid name if there ever was one) doesn’t realize that she’s homely. Yes, Miley is homely, but she does possess, like Britney Spears (remember her) a sophomorically sexy body.
So, she wiggles her ass, sticks her tongue out, acts down and dirty and think this will make up for her homely little face.
“Wise”... You got that right. We are close enough here in Memphis and surrounding areas to see these guys every once in a while at an outdoor expo or something. Fine folks.
Oh, and in case there are a few who didn’t already know, here’s an excerpt from a quickly Bing’d article (link at end)
“Yet Robertson, who first found wealth as the inventor of the Duck Commander duck calls and then fame as the patriarch of a clan of Louisiana duck hunters on A&Es Duck Dynasty reality series, is no backwoods bumpkin. Hes a multi-millionaire with a masters degree in education. Hes also perhaps the best athlete ever to come out of the little town of Vivian, La.
In the 1960s, Robertson, now 66, was the starting quarterback at Louisiana Tech for two seasons ahead of Terry Bradshaw. His teammates and a coach recall him as a talented, outdoors-obsessed character who walked away from his final year of eligibility to spend more time hunting and fishing, but had the talent to play in the NFL”
