Full Title:Leaked Documents Reveal US Sees Israel as a Major Spying Threat

Free Republic:Thursday,August 29, 2013-Leaked Documents Reveal US Sees Israel as a Major Spying Threat

The Obama administration views Israel as one of the top spying threats facing its intelligence services, leaked documents reveal. A secret budget request obtained by The Washington Post from former NSA contractor Edward Snowden lumps Israel alongside U.S. foes Iran and Cuba as “key targets” for U.S. counterintelligence efforts.

The document suggests Israel does not believe U.S. assurances that its interests are aligned with Israel's on crucial issues such as Iran and peace talks with the Palestinians. “To further safeguard our classified networks, we continue to strengthen insider threat detection capabilities across the Community,” reads the FY 2013 congressional budget justification for intelligence programs. “In addition, we are investing in target surveillance and offensive CI [counterintelligence] against key targets, such as China, Russia, Iran, Israel, Pakistan and Cuba.”

The White House and the Israeli Embassy did not respond to requests for comment. The revelations come as no surprise to Georgetown University's Paul Pillar, who retired as the national intelligence officer for the Near East in 1995 after a 28-year career in U.S. intelligence. Israeli spying, he said, has remained a major threat since U.S. citizen Jonathan Pollard received a life sentence in 1987 in a massive spying case that gravely strained relations between the two countries. “Israel should be assumed to continue to have an aggressive intelligence collection operations against the United States,” Pillar said. While much information is collected through traditional political contacts, “I would personally have no doubt that that is supplemented by whatever means they can use to find out as much as they can about what we're doing, thinking, deciding on anything of interest to Israel, which would include just about any Middle Eastern topic.”

The issues of continued Israeli settlement construction and Obama's strong interest in reaching a negotiated settlement to avoid a confrontation with Iran over its nuclear program, Pillar said, are two issues where U.S. and Israeli interests “certainly diverge,” he said. Spying, he said, could give Israel “warning indicators” before any public decisions, and enable the country to put its “political machine in action” and get the United States to reconsider. “If I were in [Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu's shoes and had his perspective,” Pillar said, “I would spare no effort to try to collect every bit of intelligence I could, in secret as well as openly.” He said the public revelations won't impact U.S.-Israeli relations. “Everything is trumped by political realities,” Pillar said. “Don't expect any statement by the White House press secretary tomorrow that says, 'Oh my gosh, we are really upset with the Israelis for trying to spy on us'. You're never going to hear anything like that, because politically it is hazardous for basically any American politician – and certainly an incumbent American administration – to underscore ... the divergence of U.S. and Israeli interests.”

I get livid, full of rage when I come across reports of Israel spying on our country. I am a Jewish supporter of Israel and its Zionist perspective but I am an American, first and foremost, jingoistic patriot in a manner that transcends any other of my allegiances.

Assurances from the Israeli government over allegations of spying that span decades with promises never again to engage in such activities, only to be caught again is shameless and sinister and Israel should be punished for such deeds to the fullest extent.

I've also always believed the punishment against Pollard in receiving one of the harshest sentences in history for the espionage committed is one he richly deserves and not be released until he serves out the full sentence.

I must say, it's reports like this that make me so very ashamed of Israel, so very ashamed for the utter betrayal they continue to commit without abandon.

Post #32 To: lbryce Dude: We love Israel. Israel loves us. And you’re right, Pollard should have burned long ago. But we spy on each other. We all spy on each other. There are plenty of books and articles about this phenomenon: The UK spies on us and vice versa. France tries to spy on us, and everything that isn’t nailed to the floor leaks out of France. We also share secrets and technology. It’s just how things are. And heck, the posters are right: Obama is a threat to Israel, he’s said it, he’s declared it, he’s proved it. Does that mean we are at war with Israel? No, we just have a crummy President right now. They know it, we know it.

Yeah, I see what you mean. You want to take the high moral ground, which I can well understand as you've said; we all spy on each other and it’s just how things are.

If I take your rationale for the ghastly justification in which you advocate one country spying on another whose very magnanimity, benevolence, largesse it owns its very soul to because we all spy on each other and it's just how things are then I can apply the same logic, if that's what you want to call it, to justify murder because we all kill each other and it's just how things are.

I don't know who you think you are. You speak to me as if I'm some wet-behind-the-ears novice of some sort to take under your wing and teach me the way of the world. You are naive beyond words, your morality, scruples, beyond redemption, your willingness to betray your country is an anathema to all, everything I believe in.

I assume you are of the Jewish faith and if so you are a shameless embarrassment to the rest of us deserved of the status of pariah. It's people like you, the duplicitous, ungracious, exploitative persona that festers within, that belie the high moral ground most of us as Jews choose to take in life, things like honor, patriotism, service in duty of, that comes too hard for you but is to the rest of us a noble, divine calling.

Nixon despised the soviets more than baker hated Israel. Get your head out of the sand and do not threaten me. I do not take kindly to threats nor to someone putting words in my mouth. Methinks you sound like a damned kapo.
Do you think your red and blue letters are going to make the powers that be love you?

There is nothing more for me to say on this issue. I’ve made my point abundantly clear. Anyone posting messages to me will not be responded to. If you are filled with such righteous-indignation about advocating treason against this country, I would suggest going to your local synagogue and make your peace with Hashem. Or address your frenzied complaints to the Moderator. I am finished here. Hope you all enjoy conversing with yourselves.

This thread will instantly be more pleasant. By the way, I’m not Jewish. But I am extremely pro-Israel who is surrounded by enemies, including the Obama Administration. Have a nice day, if you have the personality for it.

We are. That is why I pinged him/her, so he could see my post in his defense, and against the other hysterical viewpoint.

I do not subscribe to any of your Talmudical.-hairsplitting distinctions in trying to come up with why Israel ought to be given license to steal military, intelligence information from its benevolent friend and benefactor.

Oh, no! the Tel Aviv sky is going to come crashing down on us beach-goers, if Israel can't steal, spy on America. Oh, no! But Obama hates Israel and ergo we must do whatever we can, the Ten Commandments be dammed, steal, lie, cheat. It's all for a worthy cause to make sure Israel survives so it can get another handout.

Oh, no! Oy, Vey! Oy Gevalt!! What will we do? What will we do?

P.S., frenzied complaints, lol. Frenzied, heh, heh. If you think that my reply to you was a “frenzied” complaint, then I suggest the word “frenzied” better describes your state of mind.

These are the type of moronic, demented arguments, that you know, I really shouldn't be saying this, that are so based in liberal, left wing mindthink that I can't believe is emanating from a post here at the heart of the conservative. right wing universe. Listen to yourselves. Remember how you all ridicule liberals for their illogical, emotional, knee jerk reaction to everything which all, every one of your arguments now emulate.

For example but you started this thread a crybaby's lament if ever I heard one. I haven't seen any guidelines that require anyone to respond to a thread they've started. But you started this thread, you poor pathetic nebech. Listen to yourself KVETCH. But still, the emotional knee jerk reactions by you all defy your conservative credentials. And for just one thread you all cry like some left-wing, illogical liberal whose EBT card gets overdrawn. Really, think about it, look in the mirror and see a left-wing, liberal puss stare straight back at you.

It's mind-boggling to see someone like you wrap themselves up in the Constitution, espousing all these wonderful principles, the rights of Man, Bill of Rights. I did not as much impugn you in any way shape or form, speak about your less than stellar mental acuity, your half-stuttering inability to put two words together in a meaningful way, your clueless lack of self-awareness, the impulsive, brutish manner you lash out to heap indignities on me like some bloated bovine leaving their calling card all over the barn door in a fit of diarrhea-induced largesse. Yet you've assaulted my sensibilities simply because you seek to deny me my inalienable right at free expression.

Can you be anymore beneath contempt than that? Can hypocrisy transcend the depths of your contemptuous persona that lies deep within Satan's lair?

...ergo we must do whatever we can, the Ten Commandments be dammed...

You have used the word "ergo" when you could have said "therefore."

Proclaiming yourself a Jew, using the word Hashem, and therefore ostensibly aware of the tenets and laws, you have used the word "damned." But you misspelled it.

You are therefore guilty of subtracting from the Sum Total of Human Knowledge, and are sentenced to read MODERN GRAMMAR AND USAGE as well as all of the posts by the Jews for Jesus on Free Republic religion threads.

Also, seeing as how you are evidently a resident of Tel Aviv, you are sentenced to walk into a ridiculous little gallery on Shabazi Street in Neve Tsedek called "ArtSpiration" and pay too much for a giclee.

You may only redeem yourself by eating Masabacha twelve times at Doron v'Shlomo near the Shouk Ha'Carmel. No, you don't get an address. You have to find it as part of your penance. Saying "ergo" again will send you to Hell immediately. Amen.

I'm not Jewish and have no ax to grind. However, its time everyone realized that we are now fighting the enemy from within. If I were involved in Israeli intelligence I would not even think twice about getting all the information I could on those supporting terrorism world wide regardless of who it is. What the US does not seem to realize is that Israel is a tiny country and can afford only so many mistakes before they cease to exist. To fail in getting intel whenever and where ever they can is self destructive. They will do what they have to do and rightly so, IMHO.
