The father of teen star Miley Cyrus said the Disney TV show "Hannah Montana" that made her a worldwide star, in truth destroyed his family, and he blamed it for sending his daughter out of control.
Country singer Billy Ray Cyrus said he was scared for 18 year-old Miley after a series of scandals including an infamous video last year which showed her getting high on the psychedelic herb salvia.
And he said he wished that "Hannah Montana" had never happened.
"The damn show destroyed my family," Cyrus told GQ magazine in an interview for its March edition. "I'd take it back in a second. For my family to be here and just everybody be okay, safe and sound and happy and normal would have been fantastic. Heck, yeah. I'd erase it all in a second if I could."
Cyrus, 49, played father to his daughter on "Hannah Montana" -- a wholesome Disney Channel show about a normal teenager by day but a singing star at night -- that launched Miley Cyrus as a teen idol and top-selling recording artist.
"Hannah Montana" launched in 2006 and ended after four seasons in January 2011.
Last October, the "Achy Breaky Heart" singer filed for divorce from his wife Tish after a 17-year marriage.
Cyrus compared his daughter's current situation to celebrities like Kurt Cobain, Anna Nicole Smith and Michael Jackson, who all died in tragic circumstances.
"I'm scared for her," Cyrus said of Miley. "She's got a lot of people around her that's putting her in a great deal of danger. I know she's 18 but I still feel like, as her daddy, I'd like to try to help. Take care of her just a little bit, to at least get her out of danger.
Maybe he has migraines and/or needs glasses.
I'll take that bet for $100
She is the exact same age as my oldest daughter and will turn 21 on November 23rd. While Mylie may indeed OD in the next few years, the odds are that it will not happen in the next few months.
My daughter liked Hannah Montana but she moved on as Mylie started circling the drain.
The attacks on Cyrus on this thread are amazing. We’ve never seen kids of clergy, or military, or police, or politicians, or corporate execs who’ve totally messed up their lives at early ages?? Fortunately for most of those young folks and their parents, their egregious behavior is not in the public eye.
If you have $100 not going for groceries, would you like to make a bet on the NYC Mayor election? I have pledged $100 to FR if Anthony Weiner is NOT the next mayor. The primary is coming up in a couple of weeks, so if he loses, I’ll have to pay!
Whiny-ass....go DO something to save your daughter, you jag!
I think the latter extraordinarily unlikely, but I guess anything is possible.
Maybe he’s oppressed by institutional racism.
A couple of examples:
Is there any reason that modern celebs couldn't do the same?
They still do in Japan (for the most part). One of my contemporaries (Mamoe Yamaguchi) was a teenage heartthrob who dominated the music charts there in the 1970s and early 1980s. Then she decided to give up show biz for marriage and a family. When I lived there 1988-2002, she was in the news exactly once.
Some flack had scouted out a kindergarten entrance ceremony she was going to attend with her child. News leaked out and the place was besieged with her fans. When one of the reporters thrust a mike in her face, she made a statement to the effect that while she appreciated everybody's attention and admiration, her show business career was over and she was happy as a mother. Everybody please respect the privacy of the other people in attendance and go home. And they did. More than a few even applauded.
LOL!
He’s as much a media whore as his daughter...
You know what they say, there is no such thing as “bad” publicity.
Every time your face is on the tube or your name is mentioned in People magazine, that’s bucks in your pocket...
Face it, if Manson wasn’t locked up, he’d be a multi-millionaire.
Spot on! The talentless have to stoop to this kind of stuff to get attention. It’s just another sign of Gresham’s Law applied to popular culture. To get and maintain attention these clown’s have to come up with something even more outrageous than their previous show. In the words of Theodore Dalrymple, “This sets up the equivalent of an arms race, with more and more extravagant gestures required to mark a person from the herd.” But in the end their so called unconventionality becomes the new conventionality, an immersion in a new herd mentality, if you will, a rigid conformity of nonconformity. Believe me, if could get away with having a live orgy on stage they’d do it. “Artists” are beginning to be “attention whores,” and little else. To me they’re simply banal, boring in the extreme. It’s a sign of the times. Did you notice how more and more people try to turn themselves into a walking art exhibit. And if not that, then perhaps a mobile aural assault platform whereby they can be heard from a block away. Having no other way of distinguishing themselves they scream, “Dammit, look at me! Look at me! Hear me! Notice me!” I have noticed; now, get out of my face you worthless pos. One other thing, a real artists doesn’t go around calling himself an “artist.”
What's your point?
Big difference between good people who tried to raise their kids properly and came up short, or had events beyond their control interfere -- and entertainers or others who deliberately shape their children into liberal-secular-godless living temples to the serpent.
I am reminded of Cher, and how she encouraged the Chaz thing to experiment with lesbianism early on. "Find yourself, what's right for you". Maybe Billy Rae wasn't so directive in his evil instructions -- more to the permissive non-judgmental side, I would guess, leaving open the possibility Miley would make all the wrong choices and did.
Ummm, check out Jason Biggs Twitter feed. It’s promoted on the Nickelodeon website. He makes jokes about loving the kids choice awards because of all the underage girls who want to have sex with him.
“I guess he & her mother had nothing to do with it.”
It’s possible. My parents were both meth heads and now I’m married, mother of four (soon to be five), learning to be Christian, and a conservative. None of that happened because of my parents so it’s possible that none of what Miley is doing is due to her parents.
Excuse me, but at the very least, he had to give permission for her to do the show.
She’s on the fast track to becoming the next Lindsay Lohan and Amanda Bynes.
No, Billy Ray. You never sat down and told your daughter, “Don’t be a whore”
I’ve been thinking that’s the problem. “Hannah Montana” with the money and media exposure and the elevated parental responsibilities and iron-tight necessary oversight would ruin his family. Yep, that’s it. It wouldn’t be Billy Ray’s lack of effort or, by the way, who is her mother? It’s that doggone successful show when his daughter was a pre-teen / teen. It would never be a lack of guidance or oversight or him allowing his child to be exposed to the off-camera filth and parties that are the entertainment industry. Sounds like Billy Ray is a frownin’ on the situation.
Yeah, we all know about this sick puke.
