Billy Ray Cyrus: 'Hannah Montana' Show 'Destroyed My Family' (2011)

The father of teen star Miley Cyrus said the Disney TV show "Hannah Montana" that made her a worldwide star, in truth destroyed his family, and he blamed it for sending his daughter out of control.

Country singer Billy Ray Cyrus said he was scared for 18 year-old Miley after a series of scandals including an infamous video last year which showed her getting high on the psychedelic herb salvia.

And he said he wished that "Hannah Montana" had never happened.

"The damn show destroyed my family," Cyrus told GQ magazine in an interview for its March edition. "I'd take it back in a second. For my family to be here and just everybody be okay, safe and sound and happy and normal would have been fantastic. Heck, yeah. I'd erase it all in a second if I could."

Cyrus, 49, played father to his daughter on "Hannah Montana" -- a wholesome Disney Channel show about a normal teenager by day but a singing star at night -- that launched Miley Cyrus as a teen idol and top-selling recording artist.

"Hannah Montana" launched in 2006 and ended after four seasons in January 2011.

Last October, the "Achy Breaky Heart" singer filed for divorce from his wife Tish after a 17-year marriage.

Cyrus compared his daughter's current situation to celebrities like Kurt Cobain, Anna Nicole Smith and Michael Jackson, who all died in tragic circumstances.

"I'm scared for her," Cyrus said of Miley. "She's got a lot of people around her that's putting her in a great deal of danger. I know she's 18 but I still feel like, as her daddy, I'd like to try to help. Take care of her just a little bit, to at least get her out of danger.

didn’t Billy think that sick lesbian whacko Annie Leibowitz did SUCH a tasteful photo spread of his daughter when she was a young teenager?

now she’s surrounded by flamboyant gays, druggies and hip hoppers and he wonders where his little fly girl went wrong

Will Smith should have taken his boy out of there as soon as he saw her coming down the steps onto the stage.

Any pre pubescent child simply cannot cope with being exposed to sexual images.

I do not care who tries to argue the point nor what arguments are used, regarding not being able to stop it.

When parents condone the exposure by not bringing the kids away from it and/or explaining it, the trauma is exponentially magnified.

Our stupid stupid misguided birth control culture will get used to this by talking it to death, giving it millions of hits on youtube and desensitizing everyone to it.

but this is illegal in Russia. Illegal.

they know that sexualizing minors leads to big trouble.

And the mother of Will Smith’s kids ought to be dope slapping someone mostly her stupid ex husband.

I saw part of this video and what struck me was the rappers that came on after her and the guy with her and the dancers in the rappers’ show.

They are all just as perverted, or worse and no one says anything about it.

Anyone who had not tuned in to the fact that Disney has been horrible since about 1968, worsening all the time, sexualizing their stars, their audience and their cartoon princesses is just stupid

We have no problems with the kids as most of them are adorable, courteous and want to have fun. The reverse can be said about the parents or “guardian” (whatever the new homo parent label is called). At least at Nick, you won’t be sickened unlike Disney Family. It’s full on fag central in the office. We just send our interns to deal with these pukes. If our interns can stomach dealing with them, they’re Hollywood material.

Exactly. This sounds like a guilty conscience talking. I’m sure he doesn’t like some of the things she is doing but I remember interviews with him prior to this where he thought her fame and projects were the best thing since sliced bread. As ye sow, so shall ye reap.

What is the over/under on her being in the “Adult Entertainment Industry” in a few year’s time?

She just needs a real man to tell her what to do and when.

Her parents assisted in ruining her life for a show that had no value what-so-ever.

That’s a pretty low price for your soul, man.

And no, I’m not ridiculing the man. I bet lots of Hollyweird parents feel this way, in spite of the extent to which they helped create the situation.

I suspect this "Outraged Father" routine is just part of the publicity campaign. Part of rebranding effort to transform Miley Cyrus from a Teen Pop Idol into an Adult Sex Symbol. I don't trust a word these Hollywood types say. Every word is a lie, including "and" and "the".

If you are getting too much publicity, fire your publicist!

For all of you on both sides of the “Bad Kid” and/or “Bad Parenting”....

The best, most important part of parenting is how well you seed the proper values and morals in your children starting at an early age. They do listen but they also observe and mimic. Parent aggressively with conviction for as long as you can. At some point parenting turns into guidance and then counseling.

It’s never to late to try and recapture the attention to influence their behavior and decision making later. But at some point, all your hard work parenting will be “graded” by what kinds of good and bad decisions they make as they move out on their own (College, work, military, etc.)

I’m sure Daddy Cyrus wished he’d done things differently. But he has plenty of company even if he thought is intentions were pure. The worst part of this? Miley Cyrus may not know what good parenting looks like either. All Billy had to do was to act in real life as his character did on the show.

She’s a stripper.

What is it that makes people want to continue their ignorance?

When I saw Janet Jackson come out on stage at the super bowl half time, I turned it off, saying, Eh1, she’s a stripper; I’ll turn it back on in a half hour for the game.

But, no, that’s not good enough. I have to hear about it for this many years hence, plus put up with kids telling me how good Justin Timberlake is, who’s only talent is getting himself in ant the right time, taking advantage of a stripper.

Kids watched Hannah Montana for the same reason their dizzy mothers watch Oprah - because they are told she is good.

Think, mothers. Get home and pay attention to what is going on with your families.

My kids have turned out fairly successful. I wonder how much is due to me, and how much is due to the Lord and the church they grew up in ...

I'll speculate there was/is a proper measure of both.

Good advice and ... my kids hardly watched any TV growing up - we locked it in the closet. As much as possible they weren’t exposed to a lot of crap in OUR home. I realize they saw it at other kids homes from time-to-time, but we never Normalized the crap on TV in OUR house.

I feel a lot worse for kids and decent adults who were exposed to the video clip unexpectedly

Good point. We use Netflix, so we don't get surprise views of things, or terrible ads.

I was at my mother's last week, and she has CNBC on when she's at home. That was enough tv for me for quite a while!

I was using the 3rd listed definition, “To make ineffective.” You never know when you’ll need it for a crossword puzzle.
