The movie The Butler saw its weekend box office receipts plummet by nearly a third, from $24.6 million in its opening week to $17 million last week, after a storm of protest from Republican and veterans groups.
The film depicts a White House butler who served eight presidents, and has come under fire for its portrayal of former President Ronald Reagan and his wife Nancy as being racially insensitive and for casting Jane Fonda as the first lady.
Supporters of President Reagan and veterans groups especially have criticized the film, with some calling for boycotts.

No maybe about that. He played Hans Gruber, the leader of the terrorists in the first Die Hard.
the infowarrior
“Ve begin bomben in fumpf minuten.” (Chortling like Count von Count)
He was the head terrorist in die hard.
About the only movies I watch anymore are on the Turner Classic channel. My favorites are from the thirties, and particularly the earlier thirties. After that, they’re too modern for me. :)
Chalk it up to her brilliant “go pick a fight with a Swiss store clerk” PR campaign...
They wanted mac daddy to play this role, but he was much to busy playing golf and planing vacations.
I think your estimate of marketing costs is high. Even the successful movies do not generally have a total gross more than twice production costs. If your statement was true, Hollywood would have gone bust long ago.
. One rule of thumb is that the film should make its production costs in the first two weeks if it's going to be profitable. Butler has done more than that.
However much you want to believe that it's going to lose money, that won't happen. It's going to end up in the black, particularly after international gross is factored in.
It won't increase Oprah's fortune significantly, but it won't cost her.
“Reporting” like this, is why I disregard everything coming from Newsmax...
I think liberals like Jane Fonda like to play conservatives, because they are racists, but can’t act like that in their real lives, but know they can be as racist as they want if they claim they are “pretending”.
Like the racist college liberals who got off for their racism by claiming they were just seeing how people would react.
Sure—Oprah’s going to win an Oscar. I think “The Butler” will run the Oscar table—you know how much those self-congratulating Hollywood leftists love movies that stick thumbs in the eyes of their enemies. Look at “Reds.”
Yes, Oprah will manage to walk away with every hollyweirdo award out there but she won’t get any of my ticket money. I can see her low information fans rushing out to see it the first few days but don’t see it having any staying power.
Good news this weekend after reading of big opening weekend take for this travesty...
Took folks awhile to get it but get it they did...
A 33% drop weekend to weekend is a very impressive hold for a movie in its second week in release.
OK, so I’m a sucker for ANY news if it may be a failure for the left...
so it wasn’t a failure...*bubble burst*
I don't know anything about this movie. Forrest Whitaker is a great actor, but Jane Fonda and Oprah Winfrey will keep me away from this.
Still, pretending the movie is bombing when it's doing pretty well is just silly. Typical Newsmax.
I agree. It's silly to try to paint the movie as a flop. However, at best, The Butler is a modest hit.
the irony of the film is that they ignored the many Filipino Americans who worked in the White House: the WH kitchen was staffed by the US Navy, and lots of Filipinos were in the culinary section of the US Navy...
but making a film that mentioned Asians would mess up their thesis.
I’ve boycotted hollywood for years....I feel the same way you do. I don’t know anything about todays hollywood “stars”....give me Bogart, John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart and Robert Mitchum any day. hollywood can fry in hell!
The oscars, like the nobel peace prize, don’t mean a thing...they’ve been degraded.
Jane Fonda plays nancy reagan.
nothing more need be said.
But for oprah winfry this movie would have been over before the first picture taken. This is not film, this is preWWII propaganda. Goebles would have liked it.
