Nearly 20 hours before James DiMaggio's house caught fire, the 40-year-old was already on the road with San Diego County teenager Hannah Anderson, as evidenced by a photograph taken at a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint, officials said Tuesday.
San Diego County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Jan Caldwell said DiMaggio and the 16-year-old were photographed in his Nissan Versa at a westbound Old Highway 8 checkpoint at 12:10 a.m. on Aug 4.
The fire at DiMaggio's property in Boulevard -- was reported about 8 p.m. that day.....
The photograph was further evidence that the fires were set after DiMaggio fled the area, Caldwell said.
Search warrants released last week indicated Hannah was picked up from a cheerleading practice the afternoon of Aug. 4, but Caldwell said that the practice was the day before.
It remains unclear when Hannah's mother and brother -- whose bodies were found on DiMaggio's property -- were killed.
Coroner's officials confirmed Monday that Christina Anderson died of blunt force injury to the head, but said it was unknown when her fatal injuries occurred.

The girl was answering questions online to strangers, and she said he set a timer to set the fire.
It’s hard to imagine that this was somebody’s plan:
Who would think to kill two people and then light fires to draw police and fire to the location of their bodies all the while they are vying for time to get as far away as possible.
Something is VERY fishy about Hannah’s relationship with the dead guy!
I can't disagree with you. It really means nothing other than providing evidence to either back up or impeach statements made to the police by Hannah.
They might have been running an errand or getting something from the store or returning from Lakeside with her clothes packed for the journey.
And yet based upon this "so what" they want to close the case.
She said that but the search warrants seem to have only turned up “arson wire” — nothing else pointing to a timer device that could give them a 20 hour headstart.

Sometimes criminals are not too smart. Perhaps he thought that burning the bodies would conceal their cause of death.
There are any number of simple ways to set up a time delayed fire.
Criminals are rarely geniuses. He probably thought 20 hours was enough get away time and also hoped to destroy evidence.
It seems obvious to me that DiMaggio was living in his own self deluded fantasy land.
Why conceal the cause of death if no matter what the cause it will point to you — unless the cause of death pointed to someone else that you wanted to protect.
Sorry, if that is supposed to be an answer to my question, I am not following you.
Sorry, ignore my #30, as I thought I was responding to another post.
So you think the girl killed them?
Obviously there was some evidence there that he wanted destroyed and he was willing to risk their get away in order to destroy it.
So then what was that evidence and was it destroyed??
That has to be a possibility — an angry teenager not getting her way whacking mom on the head with a crowbar — and her biological father willing to take the blame to protect her.
Bingo! I believe the mother finally realized their relationship had turned sexual and she confronted them. DiMaggio went nuts and killed her. Hannah didn’t kill anyone but I believe she went with him willingly.
Then again, I’ve seen cases where everyone thought the boyfriend killed some girl’s mother then it turns out it was the daughter who actually did the killing.
Assigning good logic to criminals is a waste of time.
Officials say the victims were tortured. The simplest explanation is that he wished to conceal that, perhaps from both Hanna and his own relatives and friends.
And no, his fire plan didn’t work because the garage fire started late, possibly after firefighters had arrived and it was put out leaving the mother’s body mostly intact, so they know exactly what was done to her.
I wonder if he was torturing the mother in the garage in regards to Hanna’s paternity?
This guy was a pus bucket, because no matter which way you slice it he’s a guy that either boinked his best friend’s wife or he developed an unhealthy interest in boinking his best friend’s minor daughter.
Good guys don’t do either one of those things.
I also think if Hanna were a Lolita, there would be texts and tweets going back months, because that is what teen girls do, they flaunt their new found power over men to their friends.
There is always a method to the madness otherwise there would never be a need for police investigations.
So they say but they have provided no details or evidence of just what kind of "torture" they might be talking about.
They were both dead before the fire was set and the mother died from blunt force trauma. Are they calling a whack on the head with a crowbar torture???
