Nearly 20 hours before James DiMaggio's house caught fire, the 40-year-old was already on the road with San Diego County teenager Hannah Anderson, as evidenced by a photograph taken at a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint, officials said Tuesday.
San Diego County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Jan Caldwell said DiMaggio and the 16-year-old were photographed in his Nissan Versa at a westbound Old Highway 8 checkpoint at 12:10 a.m. on Aug 4.
The fire at DiMaggio's property in Boulevard -- was reported about 8 p.m. that day.....
The photograph was further evidence that the fires were set after DiMaggio fled the area, Caldwell said.
Search warrants released last week indicated Hannah was picked up from a cheerleading practice the afternoon of Aug. 4, but Caldwell said that the practice was the day before.
It remains unclear when Hannah's mother and brother -- whose bodies were found on DiMaggio's property -- were killed.
Coroner's officials confirmed Monday that Christina Anderson died of blunt force injury to the head, but said it was unknown when her fatal injuries occurred.

They now say that the two were on the road 20 hours before the fire and that "the photograph was further evidence that the fires were set after DiMaggio fled the area" -- implying that there was a 3rd party -- but they want to shut it down.
Now the cheerleading practice was August 3rd not August 4th and it took them this long to find that out -- but they want to shut it down.
Now about those 13 phone calls just before both phones shut off at 4:00: Is that still 4:00 on August 4th or have they now switched those calls to August 3rd as well???
If they are both in the car together on August 4th then why would they need to be calling each other on the phone -- unless there was distance and space between them meaning that she could have easily called 911 at any of those times but she didn't.
As they struggle to come up with a timeline, an explanation of what they mean by "torture", an explanation of the crime scene, the relationship between DiMaggio and Hannah, and whether a 3rd party was involved, we get this from the police:
Caldwell said Tuesday that detectives now are working to "close the book" on the case. Our investigation is winding down, and we hope that the attention does as well....
Really -- shut it down -- are they admitting that they have blown the investigation???
Have they interviewed the cat???
He coulda looped back.
I thought I read there was evidence of timer incendiary devices.
There are a number of things in this case that just don’t seem to add up.
I’ve been curious about the details from the beginning. I just hate that I wonder so much about Hannah’s involvement. I really, really hope she wasn’t involved.
He could have done all this on his own, like kill them first, then set a timed fire starter device. But where was she during the killings?
He coulda or it just might have been an errand they were on — at midnight.
Boulevard is right there on the border so that check point might be something encountered as he went to and from his house.
To add on to my earlier post: why did they spend so much time together, taking trips to Malibu etc. Seems too cozy, and something that parents would’ve been concerned about?
It’s starting to sound like another Starkweather-Fugate type crime.
I saw Hannah on Sunday night: she was with Dexter who she poisoned, but since she is serial killer could have killed if she wanted.
BTW it was a dinner of serial lkillers: Dexter, Hannah, and the new serial killer if the future.
A little off topic, but was the cat found & rescued too? I read that the riders who reported Hannah & the kidnappers also saw a gray cat at the campsite. They thought it wd attract wolves. I admit I’ve been wondering if it was left behind in the wilderness & got eaten. Do you know if it’s okay?
I can see where they might want to wrap up though.

The question is was there an incendiary device that was utilized that could give them a 20 hour headstart??? I didn’t see one in the warrants — only arson wire which may just be a fuse for shooting off model rockets.
Why start a fire at all if they were killed by blunt force instrument and you want time to get away???
A fire draws attention to the location and the bodies and cuts your get away time.
Why not just leave the bodies there without the fire.
Without the fire it might take LE a week to find them and by then you’re long gone.
Makes no sense.
And whee, checkpoint photography... Millions of cars and innocent people photographed so that they could have this piece of evidence..
Big Brother is watching...
It is highly possible that he was a parent -- her biological father -- and that is why he spent so much time with her and her mother didn't object.
Early on the police said that they needed to determine the relationship between the two -- but crickets ever since and now they want to shut it down.
The cat was brought back and given to his sister Lora.
All of which brings up another matter all together.
The dog gets a bullet to the head but the cat gets a round trip vacation to Idaho and a new home.
Thanks for that info. I’m glad the cat is okay.
I haven’t been following this case closely. I didn’t even know a dog was involved. Whose dog was it? Why did they shoot it?
This rates a ‘So What?’
That he was with the girl 20 hours before the fire just means he was with her 20 hours before the fire. It doesn’t mean they were ‘already on the run’.
BTW it was a dinner of serial lkillers: Dexter, Hannah, and the new serial killer if the future.
I’m sorry, but that Dr. Creepy was a little too excited having all those serial killers around her. No killer on the show has been all orgasmic over serial murder like her. I even think the Trinity Killer would think she was a little too into it.
