The last sardine cannery in the United States closed its doors for good last month, due to "global competition, corporate consolidations and a general lack of appetite, at least in the United States." But not only is the small, oily, silvery fish inexpensive, easy to prepare, and loaded with things that are good for you, like Omega-3 fatty acids and calcium, its also one of the most sustainable fish around: The Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch program lists sardines as a "Best Choice" due to their abundance and high production rate. Usually canned sardines are thought of as a last resort for when you cant be bothered to cook, but reconsider. Here are some recipes......

” Does one eat the whole fish, including tail, or do you cut off the head and tail? LOL”
You eat everything in the can. Heads have been removed, but not tails. They’ve been cooked so that the little bones are mushy, like canned salmon. You don’t really know you are even eating bones because they are so soft. Excellent, excellent source of calcium.
I love sardines, but like ‘em plain with a simple sauce like mustard or Tabasco or even Mayo. Quite frankly, even as a sardine lover, these recipes all look really nasty to me.
My Pop used to love canned sardines. I never tried one, but I remember always being repulsed my the mere sight and smell of them.
They reminded me of the Civil War. Seriously.
About $1.29/can.
‘He thought it was snow, but it turns out it’s not.’
My husband (a prolific poster on FR) (and will not be pinged because screw him) is wondering what in the hell I’ve been laughing my sizeable ass off at this evening.
We really are just a bunch of overgrown 3rd graders, aren’t we? I love youze guyze.
‘I had it on good authority that the sardine factory closed for a lack of skilled help. The guy that squeezed the poop out of the sardines before they were processed and canned died and they couldnt find a American citizen to take the job although several illegal immigrants had applied for the job.’
Thanks, I needed that!! I WAS gonna have surgery to remove the growth but I’ve now laughed it off.

My son was recently mentioning getting some of that “white stuff” to use when he is out in the son for extended periods. I said, “You mean zinc oxide”? That was it. Not all the Dollar Tree’s have the same thing but I’m going to see if ours has this BBP - I’ll just tell him it was left over from when he was a baby some 45 plus years ago and is multi-purpose - but it’s still good.

Ha...other than price..ha ha...let me ask again...what are kippers. :-)
Kippers and sardines are both small herring.
Kippers are split, gutted, butterflied and cold smoked. They tend to use slightly larger fish for kippers.
If you get the ones marked “Kipper Snacks” or “Kipper Fillets” they will also be headless and tailless and in that fashion they fit nicely on a sandwich. (Like toasted Rye with a slice of tomato and very, very thin onion.)

I haven’t walked in snot for years.
Ha! Is it not ironic that the prepping GURU — and I say that with all due respect — has no taste for a superior and long-lived PREPPER food?
I love sardines, they are some of the best trapping bait you can use. Coons, coyotes, fox and bobcats love them. Nothing stinks worse than an open can of sardines.
