I wonder - I thought in the George Zimmerman trial they retrieved texts from Trayvon’s phone that someone (possibly the prosecution or his family) deleted... Maybe I am wrong.

Text messages can be retrieved and depending on your provider, deleted text message can be retrieved as well.

The prosecution used them in the Jodi Arias trial.
