More than 100,000 people around the world have applied to be the first to make a one-way trip to Mars, according to organisers of a prospective mission.
The private Dutch-based Mars One project is proposing to select a group of 40 would-be civilian astronauts this year, aiming to send four of them on a no-return journey to to the red planet in 2022.
Experts have questioned both the financial and practical viability of the mission, but that hasn't stopped people signing up in droves, including 30,000 Americans, CNN reported.
The estimated cost for the initial mission is $6 billion (£3.87 billion) which Mars One hopes to raise through sponsors and selling broadcasting rights to media companies, including a reality show of the colonisation project.
It hopes to send a second group of four people to Mars a few years after the first. None of them will return to Earth. Before leaving the astronauts would train for eight years, learning medical and survival skills.

"Get your ass to Mars."
I volunteer the Honorable Sheila Jackson-Lee ...
I volunteer several honorable members of the Congressional Black Caucus (and they can take Al Sharpton with them ).
the list......of such people....is nearly endless
a list comprised of those whose names we know...wont be exactly tiny either I suspect
I wonder if there will be any traditional NOSE ART...on the spacecraft?
a portrait of Shirely ...and Hank Tipping Guam Johnson would be PERFECT
Die enroute, or there?
Even Without obamacare.
If you die en route, do they play Stardust when you’re ejected?
Sheesh. Try to go somewhere to get away from people and everybody crowds in!
Give her the flag to plant!
I have always thought that a cheap one-way trip to Mars was feasible...they should get Robert Zubrin to plan the thing.
A better option, although very expensive, could involve building a space station whose purpose was to go from Earth orbit to Mars orbit.
Liquid fuel would power the launches to build the station. Some form of Ion thrusters would be good for getting the craft from Earth to Mars. The station would need to be nuclear powered and it would be best if it had a small rotating habitat ring for artificial gravity.
A short burst of liquid fueled thrust to start the station on its way and then switch to Ion power.
On Mars water could be turned to rocket fuel (hydrogen/oxygen)to power small vehicles to orbit to link up with the station. Nuclear power would be a must on Mars.
I think I will just wait out my time right here.
Dave! Are you there Dave?
The test rats will comprise the first flight—the intended survivors will be on the second flight. In any case, the arriving second flight should see some impressive chaos and anarchy upon arrival. Thinking Donner Pass.
Projected cost: $6 B for a four-man team
Solution: sell one seat via a lottery, $1,000 per ticket, figure $500 M net of cost
Sell three other seats outright for $500 M each (possibly governments will buy these seats)
Sell naming rights for $1 B
That’s $3 billion
LAUNCH twice
>>>spread the overhead. Indeed, if you launch more than two, you’ll be making money.
I think I'm gonna be glad
I think it's today, yeah
The gal that's driving me mad
Is going away
She's got a ticket to ride
She's got a ticket to ride
She's got a ticket to ride-
But she don't know where...
They’d need to put a WIDE LOAD sign on the rocket.
And people think Madoff went out of business.
Barnum was right.
