If Windows Phone really does start to take off, it will be in large part thanks to the efforts of Nokia, the Finnish device manufacturer that has come under withering criticism from both analysts and investors for choosing Microsoft’s mobile platform over Google’s Android. Seeking Alpha has posted a compilation of charts showing that Nokia has been slowly increasing its market share in many key markets, which is helping Windows Phone gain a foothold in its efforts to become the world’s No. 3 mobile operating system.
As you can see from the chart, which is based on numbers from Kantar Worldpanel, Windows Phone’s market share has been marching unevenly upward in the United Kingdom, France and Australia while it’s more or less maintained a consistent market share in Germany and Spain. The only market to see a big dip recently in Windows Phone adoption is Italy but that country still has the highest Windows Phone adoption rate of all markets shown at just under 10%.
Since Nokia accounted for a whopping 81% of all Windows Phone devices shipped last quarter, it’s no stretch to say that the company is almost single-handedly responsible among device manufacturers for Windows Phone’s recent uptick. One thing to watch for if Nokia’s Windows Phone ventures start turning profitable is if other OEMs such as HTC give the platform a second look for flagship devices since they’ve had little luck making money from flagship devices based on Android.
I just went from iPhone to Android and am happy so far. I did not even look at a WinPhone.
I’m not surprised. Most of Nokia’s Windows Phone sales are soaring in Europe and Asia but NOT in the USA.
The key thing for Nokia phones is the best cameras on the market and very solid (hard to break) design.
I love my Nokia 920 and can’t wait for the 1020.
Well, when it comes to taking pictures, the Nokia Lumia 920 has a 4.5” display with a ppi of 332 and a 1,280x768p resolution. The iPhone 5 has a 4” display with 326ppi and a 1,136x640p resolution. The Lumia wins because it has a larger screen, a higher ppi and the screen responds to gloves and even fingernails.
The Nokia Lumia 920 rear camera is 8.7MP, and its front camera is 1.3MP. It has autofocus, a dual LED flash and has PureView and Carl Zeiss optics. The iPhone 5 has an 8MP rear camera and a 1.2MP front camera. It has LED flash, autofocus, FaceTime, geo-tagging, face detection and panoramic choices. The Nokia Lumia 920 rear camera wipes the floor with the iPhone 5, especially in low light, and is actually the best smartphone camera I’ve seen this year so far.
However, The Nokia Lumia 920 also comes with lots of Nokia-exclusive apps like Lens Caps and Nokia Maps on top. Unfortunately, these won’t beat the 700,000-plus apps available to the iPhone 5. The Windows Market Place will have to play catch-up.
However, The 32GB Nokia Lumia 920 will ONLY cost $99.99 on a two-year contract. The iPhone 5 32GB is $299. The much lower price tag gives the Lumia a win when it comes to value for money IMHO.
I was forced the other way with my new job...Android to Iphone. I really like the polish of the Apple hardware, but it doesn’t compete with the flexibility of Android. Apple works, but it’s been sitting on the table too long.
Display size and camera megapixels are just numbers to entice the public. The real important thing is the sensor..which Nokia wipes the floor with against the competition. As soon as my contract is up with Sprint I am jumping ship to Nokia and WP8. Apps will follow the more people who buy windows phone.
Realistically who uses all 700,000 apps?
Most people use no more than a dozen or so.

I actually lucked into a helpful situation. I have carried iPhone for couple years and was not happy and company issued my a new Galaxy S4. After playing with that for a couple months I will drop my iPhone and go with the same or equivalent when I upgrade.
My daughter has an iPhone5 and I was underwhelmed.
That phone will replace our small "take it anywhere" camera, which still, at this point, takes better pics than any camera.
My wife & I both upgraded to Nokia Lumia 928 WP8 phones right after Verizon started offering them, sometime in late May (last month on this graph). We really like them.

LOL, you’ve actually asked the right question.
It’s not really the quantity of the Apps available that’s important, but the QUALITY and the USEFULNESS of the apps developed for the phone.
If all you’re providing for me is games to play, I don’t need them.
Interesting take — “reliable sources” say the Galaxy is nothing but cheap plastic compared to the iPhone ....

Got one for my Wife as well, for NOTHING.
It is my favorite Smart Phone so far. Gave up a Droid for it and I like the WIN 8 Setup. I am not a Smart Phone Fanatic, but it fits my needs well.
I dropped it, and I mean DROPPED it onto Concrete twice. (I have a holster for it now BTW, too little luckily but not too late). I thought it was toast both times. Did the “reset” four button trick and it was as good as new.

How did you do that? I’d like to be able to do that too...
We were current ATT Customers. They had a deal when the Phones first came out where you upgrade and get a Visa Debit Card after buying the Phones for $50 each. My Wife’s old Company has a discount program with ATT, and I think it was a promotion through them.
The “net” cost was ZERO, but living in CA we had to pay the full boat Sales Tax based on the Retail Price. It was ZERO net cost for the Phones but it was about $60 to the State.
I did sell my old Droid for $60 to one of those Online Buying Companies, so I ended up getting them FREE.
Like anything else it was timing. When I can get a similar deal on the new 1020 Model, I’ll do it again.

Well, it was just good Timing. My Droid was OK, but after I saw that Nokia I was hooked. In a room full of iPhones, the Nokia 920 is King IMHO. The 1020 looks like a winner, so I’m keeping my eyes open for another deal at some point.
If I can work it out, selling the 920’s to one of those Online outfits might cover the entire cost of the new Phones. We’ll see. No rush right now. I like the improved technology but I don’t like paying for it. LOL
You can usually get those type of deals on Black Friday without having to get up at 2:00 AM and stand in line.
It still kills me that we had to pay Sales Tax on the full Retail Price, but it works that way because we agreed to a two year Contract Extension. That is where the Carriers make their money and heaven forbid the Government doesn’t get their pound of flesh.
We still get a 20% discount on the service due to my Wife’s former Employer. Without that I would consider other options, but I’m not rocking the Boat.
