There are some rather massive old salt mines and salt deposits under parts of KS. Maybe one of these collapsed. Those are down around Hutchinson, in Central Kansas, about 250 miles from Sharon Springs (which is out on the Colorado border).

Drove past it a few times on I-70. May have stopped for gas a couple of times. It is actually a fairly large town by western Kansas standards. Any place needing four digits to express their population is.
