Angler nabs ‘vegetarian’ piranha
SEATTLE — Angler John Denton was surprised to catch what he believes to be a pacu, a relative of the piranha at Lake Ki over the weekend.
According to The Everett Herald, Denton was fishing for perch and bluegill on Sunday when he cast his line into the lake near his home and came up with the unusual catch. One of his neighbors identified the fish as a pacu, a native South American freshwater fish that are related to the piranha.
“Bang, there it was,” Denton told the Herald. “It’s a pretty big fish, a big ol’ herking fish.” The fish Denton landed weighs about four or five pounds and he said it took him around 20 minutes just to haul it in.
Denton took the fish to the Tulalip Cabela’s, where it’s being held in quarantine in a large fish tank at the back of the store.
The Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife is expected to pick it up Thursday.
Well ... if this angler had used worms instead of carrots for bait, then maybe he would of caught himself some perch or bluegill instead of a hippie vegan piranha!
Apparently they’ll live in cold water but won’t breed. Its the ones living near warm water outlets of power plants ya gotta worry about.
Vegan? How does the fish keep his dope lit?

Some fish are vegetarians. Out of necessity due to a lack of bait I once caught a drum using a cherry.

20 minutes to land it? Was he fishing with cotton thread and a bent straight pen?
Years ago I spent some time in Washington State...Asked all around where I could catch some perch...All the locals told me they don’t fish for perch...They are trash fish...
Found some perch, and ate ‘em...Good eats...

If he was fishing for perch & bluegill, I can see him using an ultra-light rig with 6 lb test.
With that equipment, a strong, active 4-5# fish may well have taken ten minutes to bring to the net (seeming like 20).
Well, they -are- trash fish. :-) I've grown up in WA... Why fish for perch when there's halibut, salmon and steelhead to be had? ;-)

Can they live and breed in those waters?

I use to catch sand bass when I lived Oklahoma. Never ate em. Too much work but, they were HeeLLatry Ue to catch.
They hit harder than large mouth and zip from one side to the next. could take quite a few minutes to reel in.
I have landed 15 lb Stripers on 5 lb leader on my my fly rod in about 5 minutes. 20 minutes is a long time for a 5 lb fish.
