London (CNN) -- The bestselling erotic novel "Fifty Shades of Grey" may have done more than spice up readers' love lives.
Firefighters in London say it could be to blame for a rise in the emergency calls from people stuck in all kinds of awkward situations -- some involving handcuffs.
The wildly-popular trilogy details the S&M-flavored love story of a recent college grad and a billionaire CEO. It's also credited with boosting sales of sex toys, driving women to hook-up sites and fueling a craze over sexual domination.
So, it's not surprising there would be a downside. In the past three years, London's fire crews have been called to 79 incidents involving people trapped in handcuffs.

Darn, I have no hand cuffs.
Then you can come save me and we won’t need to involve the fire department.
I guess it is a step up from gerbils.
Those folks are clueless. I feel sorry for people who think that sex has to be complicated to be joyful and fulfilling.
The masochist says "Oh, beat me, spank me!" and the sadist says "Heh-heh, Noooo...!"
Could be worse. We picked up a guy one time with a cape on that jumped off the dresser towards the bed to impress his girlfriend.
The ceiling fan zotted him.
This thread just screams “Laz” ;)
Hmm... maybe Mrs. Sparticus could be interested in reading this shady grey tomb.

How disgusting this writer is. The downside includes the degenerate behavior she cites in the first sentence above.
I would not recommend asking your wife to read this disgusting filth.
Perhaps your typo of “tomb” for “tome” was a Freudian slip brought about by your conscience.
Most all sexually deviant behavior is now main stream. Pedophilia will be the next civil rights push, since the homo community harbors most of them.
LOL!!
“Meatman” to the... *ZOT*
First rule of owning handcuffs: stash extra keys. Lots of extra keys. Make sure you have a long-handled key for when they’re behind your back. Second rule: Learn to pick the lock for when you don’t have a key.
I have a few pairs of handcuffs, but not for the reasons above. I carry them (or have them handy) whenever I carry a gun, which is pretty much all the time. Seems sensible to me that any situation where I draw a gun in self defense is a situation where instead of shooting somebody, I might well end up holding somebody at gunpoint. At that point, it’s important to get control of them immediately. It’s hard to call 911 with somebody at gunpoint, without dropping your guard. Then it will take what seems like hours for the cops to get there. A pair of cuffs can help solve this.
I’ve got a pair in my vehicle, and a couple pairs at home... And keys stashed all over. I also have some zip-tie cuffs. They’re almost as good and work well in a pinch.
Seems awfully tricky handcuffing someone with one hand while they are trying to take the gun out of your other hand (one ping only, hehe).
