My question is: can someone with a web background explain to me how they handled the changing background a made it flow so smoothly? (again - I DONT CARE ABOUT THE CONTENT ON THE PAGE) - Thx.

Use your browser's "view source" on the page and steal their javascript...

I think the trick is
background-attachment: fixed
there are div's with background images that are fixed to the viewport (i.e. top of the browser window) rather than the element. You only see the part of the image where the div is positioned on the page.
