In Williston, ND, fast food worker wages are roughly $14 an hour. That may sound good, but rent for a two-bedroom apartment is roughly $2000/month, (first month's/last month's/ security deposit), plus utilities.
It costs about ten bucks a head to eat at a fast food joint (top rank combo meal, medium drink/fries, plus tax).
Do they really want to go there? Most places don't have an oil boom to fuel those wages.

In that photo none of those strikers looks like they are starving, or in need of anything, they do have wants, but don’t we all.

Isn’t this Kansas undergrad’s idea essentially Obama’s “Middle-Out” strategy, distilled?

If Macdonalds has a price rise of 17% then everybody will start going to Burger King instead and a lot of Macdonalds franchises will close down.
The easiest way to capture the complexity is to paraphrase Iowahawk -
Why don't the lefties start their own fast-food places and pay their staff $15 an hour?

Clearly, the work of McDonald’s burger flippers is worth seventy-five dollars an hour.
No, make that one hundred dollars an hour.
Wait, why not two hundred dollars an hour...?
Three hundred dollars an hour would be more generous.
When the most basic and fundamental laws of supply and demand are subverted by government interference, as is happening with ever-increasing frequency, the economy of this or any nation tanks.
Burger flippers already get more than market value for their labor; if they want a raise, they can look elsewhere.
Economics 101; clearly, Obama either failed the course or never took it.
