LONDON — After months of ever more frenetic anticipation and speculation in Britain and around the world, the Duchess of Cambridge, the former Kate Middleton, entered St. Mary’s Hospital in the Paddington district of London on Monday to prepare for the birth of her first child and was “in the early stages of labor,” the royal family announced.
A brief message on Twitter was the first of a series of carefully scripted disclosures set to culminate in the announcement of an event that seems certain to draw unparalleled media coverage, even in the annals of Britain’s headline-making royal family. Because of recent changes in the law of succession, the baby will be third in line to the throne whether it is a boy or a girl and will remain so whatever the gender of subsequent children.
“Her royal highness the Duchess of Cambridge has been admitted to St. Mary’s Hospital, Paddington, London, in the early stages of labour,” said a message from Clarence House, the official residence of the duchess and her husband, Prince William, the duke of Cambridge.
The duchess had traveled by car to the hospital from another royal residence, Kensington Palace, a second message said. Reporters outside the building said the couple had slipped into the facility through a side entrance, largely unobserved by the waiting press corps.
A spokesman for the couple, speaking in return for customary anonymity, said that the duke and duchess had traveled without a police escort. “Things are progressing as normal,” the spokesman said.
There has been no official word on whether the duke and duchess are expecting a boy or a girl, and information about the birth is expected to be closely restricted.

Awww awesome. I pray for a healthy baby for them. I would like a little boy but I would accept a little girl. Either one will be on line for the throne. I have no doubt Princess Diana would have been very proud and giddy to know she would be a grandmother. I know she is there with them in spirit. How ironic that the baby will be born near the same date July 29 - Diana and Charles wedding.
After hearing so many negative stories about our government, and St. Trayvon I am not sick of hearing of the royal couple. They lift me up after all that negativity news I hear.
He's a helicopter pilot in the British Search and Rescue Force and has participated in active rescue missions. He is a Flight Lieutenant in the RAF.
He plays polo for charitable causes, is a runner (miler) also for charity, he's an avid football fan and an enthusiastic motorcyclist owning a Ducati 1198.
He may look a little milquetoasty, but he's a man's man, participating in the service of his country in many, many ways....forgoing many royal perks in favor of his military career.

Actually, it is a Franco-German name, meaning "very of" from the French tres ("very") and the German von ("of").
It is meant to emphasize the paternity (and hence financial obligation) of the father.
