EDMONTON A so-called mens rights group is defending its recent poster campaign that is sparking national outrage for claiming some women lie about being raped.
The posters were a response to the Dont be that guy campaign that aims to educate young men on alcohols role in sexual assault and define consensual sex.
Mens Rights Edmonton issued a statement on its website taking responsibility for its Dont be that girl campaign that was highly criticized by police, city officials and womens groups for sending the wrong message.
Just because you regret a one night stand doesnt mean it wasnt consensual, the posters read.
Women who drink are not responsible for their actions especially when alcohol is involved, another poster said.
The University of Alberta ordered the removal of the posters because they violated the schools posting policies.
Albertas minister of human services, MLA Dave Hancock, denounced the campaign on Twitter, saying it was appalling, dangerous and indefensible.
However, Mens Rights Edmonton defended the posters Thursday, saying there is nothing wrong with advocating against both rape and false rape accusations. The group believes the original campaign was hateful towards men and insinuates that all men are rapists.
We want rapists punished for their crimes. We also want the system to punish those that make false rape claims. How more can you trivialize real victims of rape than by making a false rape claim? the group said, adding that some studies suggest there are as many false rape reports as real rape reports.
But according to police, that claim is completely false.
Acting Insp. Sean Armstrong said there is no data that suggests false rape claims are common or dilute real reports of sexual assault.
He said after 4.5 years of working as a sexual assault detective, he had only seen one false report.
And I dealt with numerous files; many, many, many files. So theyre extremely rare, he said.
The original campaign began in Edmonton after police saw a spike in alcohol-facilitated sex assaults in the city. The eye-catching campaign was subsequently picked up by Vancouver police and organizers hope other cities will do the same.
Statistics overwhelmingly show there is a need for increased education surrounding consent, especially when alcohol is involved.
According to Battered Womens Support Services, studies involving 18- to 25-year-old men revealed that 48 per cent of the men did not consider it rape if a woman is too drunk to know what is going on.
Another study from the Canadian Womens Foundation survey found that 19 per cent of respondents think that women actually encourage sexual assault by being drunk.
The survey also revealed 15 per cent of Canadians believe women encourage sexual assault by flirting and 11 per cent think women can provoke sexual assault when they wear short skirts.
Battered Womens Support Services said that targeting a womans behaviour contributes to a culture of victim-blaming and may deter others from reporting rapes.
The idea that some women lie about rape to justify regretful behaviour further muddies the waters.
Were really angry and disturbed by the posters, said Karen Smith, executive director of the Sexual Assault Centre of Edmonton. People just dont lie about that.
She cited national statistics as evidence that false reports are incredibly rare.
One to two percent of sexual assaults reported to the police would be false. And that would be the same for any other crime that would be reported to the police.
In 2009, there were nearly 21,000 sexual assaults reported to police, according to Statistics Canada. However, that number doesnt reflect the number of actual sex assaults, as less than one in 10 attacks are reported.
StatsCan said that 97 per cent of people accused of sexual assault are young men and 55 per cent are known to the victims.
Well, you nailed it. As long we have a culture that supports recreational sex coupled with recreational drunks, we are always going to have impaired decision-making.
Wrong. Marriage is not a safe haven for men.
The laws have been changed.
Marriage can now be more dangerous for a man - especially when money is involved.
“Since when is a passed out guy deciding to put a move on a woman???? If he is falling down staggeringly drunk (as so many of these dumb women are) how is he even able to get or maintain an erection....Physiologically it doesnt happen. I have yet to see a fellow passed out being ready to go.”
In many people, the brain shuts down long before the legs do. I’ve known countless people who walk ok, talk ok, do the most ridiculous things they regret and have no memory of it the next day.
And when I told my doctor that I got sinus infections within 5 days of each time he put me on a spray (that had sinus infections as a side-effect), he looked at me and said he had never seen anyone compromised by the spray. I guess folks see what they want to see...
I respectfully decline to agree with you.
42+ years with the wife of my youth.
Thank you.
Usually I get flak for suggesting we have some morals.
REALLY when a person is PASSED OUT????
You are too dumb to continue with
go back to violating the traditions that is so much more mature
I am not giving a pass to ANYONE
Since when are the men in the room allowed to behave as if the are in Tahrir Square. This is ridiculous. Why do men ALWAYS blame the woman? (That started with Adam...don’t look at me God SHE made me do it). If men are so afraid of their reaction to a woman behaving badly then perhaps they should embrace islam and their thinking.
Personal responsibility requires more of me than just saying....’oh oh look. they are behaving badly. and since they are I not only can but I must too.’
Too often the drunken woman (who is passed out) is attacked by multiple yobs.
By the way, I happened to have sided with the Duke Lacrosse team before all of the trashing of them was found and printed. The truth is the dancer’s story did not ring true and there was no evidence to support it.
All you have said is that one does not have to treat a woman as a lady if she is behaving badly. What nonsense. My behavior towards another is NOT based on their behavior.
The fact that young men and women are ridiculous in their behavior says more about their upbringing than anything else. My children and my mother’s children NEVER behaved in the manner which you and the current culture describes. NOT all college students are insane (which the drunken behavior makes me think they are). Because you see television shots of ‘spring break’ you cannot assume that is anything other than people behaving insanely. I know lots of college students that have NEVER gone to spring break....they were either busy sleeping, studying, or working.
If you want to admit to stupid fraternity behavior do so but please don;t paint the rest of the world with it. Our children only behave in a manner consistent with what they are taught. If we don’t demand better we will never get better
Oh they are not.
blathering nonsense. it may have happened to you it does not happen as a ‘common’ occurrence
I did not use hyper anything. I used a specific definition of what I was commenting on.
If two people are out drinking they are already impaired. If you are trying to suggest that every incident of drink induced intercourse has been reported as a rape I say nonsense.
I am so done with the story. The people who are busy defending drunkenness and intercourse without benefit of marriage are just getting annoying. To justify one’s behavior and feel better about them selves these yobs are essentially saying that whatever one does when you are drunk doesn’t count; whatever one does when young doesnt count. I was just a little drunk....come on folks when or when are you going to grow up?
That is called a black out and is a good indicator of one who is an alcoholic.
So you are suggesting that these wonderful Lotharios are being falsely accused or are you saying stupid alcoholics are capable of really dangerous behavior?
You did not say simply passed out (though many males get erections in their sleep) you included falling down staggeringly drunk and absolutely there are men that are still sexually funtional in that condition.
Don’t try to change what you said in order to discredit my response to it.
It happens all the time when both parties are drunk and at least one doesn’t remember a thing.
In their drunken minds, both could have believed they were doing the right thing. They each ultimately hurt themselves by drinking.
Both are guilty and should get help for their alcohol abuse, not jail time. Some people out there just shouldn’t drink...
I've been saying this for years. A man who drives drunk is guilty, even if (especially if) he's too drunk to realize he's driving drunk. Meanwhile, if two drunk people have sex, then the woman is presumed to be unable to give consent, but the equally drunk man is presumed to have the judgement to realize that she's not qualified to give consent. BS.
The only exception I would make is if the woman is physically unconscious and completely unaware of what's happening.
In the event of the couple being married, I would presume the marriage vows constitute consent in the absence of explicit withdrawal of consent.
Sorry, but people lie about anything.
There is a reason there is a saying about 'woman scorned'.
Anyone who would claim that no rape accusation is a lie, is a fanatic who really shouldn't be listened to on the subject.
Well, the women in question believe that if the man were not consenting “Their bodies have a way to shut that thing down.”
Oh, but we cant expect anyone to handle that, can we?
Keyword to your comment is "most". Those two things do not actually guarantee anything, but do reduce the odds.
Single white heterosexual men are guilty. Always. In the eyes of liberals.
